Notes:
First of three nights at the Fox.
This was my 9th Kraftwerk show. It's been 10 long years since this band last performed in the Bay Area and this was their first time performing
at the Fox, as well as in Oakland.
I very nearly didn't attend this gig since at the time it went on sale, I had no intention of making the journey for these shows. By the time I
realized I was deluding myself, this first show had long sold out, but I had proceeded to buy tickets for the second and third nights. In order
to complete the set, I kept looking for any last minute releases and finally lucked out a week before the show. When compared to the Catalogue
shows from the week before, these regular 3D gigs are unique unto themselves and I feel very fortunate to have seen them. Besides the lengthier
performance, these shows offer up a lot more room for improv, which is what I noticed more than anything (the variations in "Aro Dynamik" are a
trip). Plus, one gets the longer version of "Autobahn," which is pure joy. I was sad to not get "Metropolis" at any of these Oakland shows, plus
out of all three Fox shows, this was the only one where no setlist variations occurred. But this first night was still amazing, thanks to an
endearing audience (the cosplay was in full force!). The floor crowd was especially lively with lots of clap alongs ("TDF tape 2" has a great
one), along with goosebump-inducing roars of love between songs. And before the show, there was cute applause made to the "Man-Machine" rhythm,
while after the show, people on BART sang the melody from "The Model" (both are moments I am sorry I did not tape). And just to mention, the
only technical flaw I spotted during the evening was that "The Man-Machine" film didn't begin immediately.
It's been 5 years since I'd last seen a show in the Bay Area, so I don't know if this is now the norm or if it was just the kind of crowd the band
now attracts (as opposed the respectful crowd at the Warfield shows in 2004). But I have to say there were a lot of rude people who acted as if
they were at an outdoor venue seeing some crappy local band as they discussed their mundane lives to friends and family. At all three shows, I got
stuck near constant chatterers. I've certainly had worse, but I still couldn't believe how loudly people talked during these shows. I'm sure it
was more annoying on the floor since during some of the extremely quiet passages, one could hear the talking from the floor. I just found it very
inconsiderate, especially since I'm sure most of these people didn't travel any further than from The Peninsula.
At this first show, the worst noise came from a group to my left that consisted of a man, a woman and her child. The woman was next to me and the
man was next to her, but he is the one heard the most on this recording. Initially, he acted as a 'Kraftwerk For Dummies' service as he explained
to his woman what each member did, which rapper sampled what track, as well as the titles and years of songs. Then it deteriorated into such asinine
comments as "the earth," "USA!" and "UFO" in reaction to the images during "Spacelab." This family is heard talking in nearly every song, but they're
at their absolute worst from "Computer Love" through "Neon Lights" and in "Autobahn." He also slapped his thigh to the melodies during "The Model,"
"Autobahn," "Radio-Activity" and "Aro Dynamik," while she did a series of quick claps in the middle of "Neon Lights" and randomly clapped in "Boing
Boom Tschak." One of them also did something that created a metal, snap-like noise and that is heard in "IMFTC," "Neon Lights" and "Aro Dynamik."
The people to my right weren't as bad by comparison. The man next to me loudly wooped after most songs (he stopped doing so after "MNS") and talked
to his friend, particularly in "The Man-Machine" and "TDF." During "TDF tape 1," a woman in the row in front of me talked and wooped a lot (I think
she really loved that song) and she can be heard through the remainder of the show. And there is phasing in "The Robots," "The Model," "TDF" and
"Aro Dynamik" from people passing in front of me. There is also some bad clapping along during "Numbers."
I taped the ambient intro and have included it. People talked through it, but it doesn't overwhelm the music and no conversations are clearly heard,
so I felt it was okay to share.
I amplified this, but did nothing else to the recording. And if burning to cd, the suggested split is between "Autobahn" and "TDF."
To make up for the anti-camera policy at the Los Angeles venue for the Catalogue shows, I took a lot of photos at these Fox shows and have included
a selection for your viewing pleasure. If you'd like to see more pics from the evening (and from the other two nights), please refer to my photo set

Infinite thanks to G3 for the tickets, for the posters, enduring the lengthy trip with me and for everything.
Please support the band by buying their official releases and merch.
