NOTES:
This was my second time at the Shrine Auditorium (first time was when I saw/recorded Bjork just earlier this year) and third time seeing the legends that are Kraftwerk (first time was back at Coachella 2008 and then again back at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016 - both of which, I did not record). And without a doubt, this was the best set of theirs I've seen. I'm sure it was helped by having pit tickets and only being about 10 feet from the stage. I know the "pit" at the Shrine can be frowned upon given how high the stage is, but I had my back on the rail (in front of the "front row" seats people) and I thought my view was absolutely perfect.
When I first got into the pit and picked a spot, I realized I was standing next to the same guy who I was standing next to at the Wolf Parade show back in January 2020 (ah, remember those times?) at the Regent. If you remember my notes/writeup of that show, that guy, who I had asked very politely to be respectful given I was going to be recording the show (aka, please don't talk to me), threw a fit and whined and cried about how I was being "rude" and "disrespectful" for asking him that. Now granted, I know he is a bit on the, umm, spectrum? So I didn't make a big deal about it, there's not much I'll be able to do, except avoid him. Well shit, here he was with a spot right next to me and he immediately just starts talking and talking, which is fine pre-show, but I knew this would be trouble during the actual show, and I sure as hell didn't pay $109 + fees for this ticket to be next to a fucking talker all night. Thankfully he moved around a bit to get a closer look at the stage and that's when I moved spots and had others take the spot next to me, blocking him from coming back and ending up next to me. Sorry, it had to be done.
Anyway, that problem out of the way, I ran into the next problem, which was I couldn't find my second shirt clip for my mics! I know for a fact I grabbed both and put them in my pocket, but upon setting up the gear (as stealthy as I could) I realized I could only find one. I must have dropped it. Where? Uber? The bathroom stall? I have no idea. So fuck, now I only have one 1 clip for 2 mics. It's always something, I swear! So I thought about putting the mics up through my mask, but settled on using the clip on the left mic and resting the right mic on my shoulder, softly checking it every now and then. That's all I could do. I made it work the best I could though.
As for the show, it seemed to be pretty much the same set (as expected) as the Hollywood Bowl show minus "Metropolis" and "Aerodynamik". It sucked losing both of those, but the band played for over 2 hours (yeah you read that right) with practically every other song you would want to hear, so what was there to complain about? I thought the 3D effects looked really great close up too...at the Hollywood Bowl, I was far back so the effect, while still cool, wasn't the best it could have been. Here tonight though, with the spot I had, it really shined! I'm so happy I was able to finally scratch Kraftwerk off the "bands I must record" list, though I had opportunities in the past, better late than never. Enjoy!
