Description:

Kraftwerk in 3D - ein Fest aus Klang, Licht und Farbe

Die Elektronik-Pioniere sind seit Mai 2022 auf "3D-Tour". Jetzt haben sie ihr einziges Deutschlandkonzert in Bonn gespielt. Die DW war dabei.

Die Sonne ist l�ngst untergegangen, im Bonner Hofgarten warten etwa 25.000 Menschen auf die Show der legend�ren Elektronik-Band. Um kurz vor 21 Uhr erklingt ein Ton, der �ber dem Gel�nde wabert. Auf einer gro�en Videowand erscheint ein stilisiertes Bild der Kraftwerker. Erst nach zehn Minuten besteigen die vier M�nner leibhaftig die B�hne. Eine elektronische Stimme begr��t das Publikum - und dann startet die Musik. Eine Collage aus "Numbers" und "Computerwelt" stimmt das Publikum auf zwei Stunden Kraftwerk ein: Ein bombastischer Sound und ein visuelles Spektakel, denn die Bilder werden in 3D auf die Videowand hinter den Musikern projiziert - entsprechend tr�gt das Publikum 3D-Brillen.
Ein bisschen wie "Zur�ck in die Zukunft"

Und so rasen die Kl�nge durch die Lautsprechert�rme, dreidimensional nicht nur im Bild, sondern auch im Ton. Pulsierender Beat, glasklare Synthesizer, B�sse, die den K�rper vibrieren lassen.

Die Kl�nge: altvertraut und dennoch modern - beim Zuh�ren wird man sich wieder bewusst, wie sehr Kraftwerk elektronische Bands wie Depeche Mode oder Ultravox beeinflusst haben und dass es Techno, wie wir ihn seit den 1990ern kennen, ohne sie wahrscheinlich nie gegeben h�tte. Bei diesem fein ausbalancierten und detaillierten B�hnensound klingt die Musik �berhaupt nicht wie 30, 40 oder gar 50 Jahre alt. Die Setliste ist vollgepackt mit Kraftwerk-Hits, von "Autobahn" �ber "Das Model" - der in den Charts erfolgreichste Kraftwerk-Hit in Deutschland, entsprechend frenetisch feiert ihn das Publikum - "Trans-Europa-Express", "Radioaktivit�t", "Tour de France" und nat�rlich "Wir sind die Roboter".

Die Videosequenzen dominieren Zahlen, Symbole, Linien, Formen und Farben. Bei "Autobahn" sind es herrlich altmodisch anmutende Animationen von Autos der 70er Jahre, die unter blauem Himmel auf der Stra�e tuckern, bei "Tour de France" werden �ltere Schwarz-Wei�-Aufnahmen des Radrennens gezeigt. Die 3D-Effekte sind eher zur�ckhaltend, nur manchmal fliegen den Zuschauenden die Noten entgegen oder eine Roboterhand greift nach ihnen. Weiter hinten ist von den Effekten kaum etwas zu sehen, viele setzen ihre Brillen ab. 3D oder nicht - das steht nicht Vordergrund. Die Musik, die viele hier seit Jahrzehnten begleitet hat, live zu erleben, ist das Wichtigste an diesem Abend.

Unfreiwillige Komik beim Konzert in Polen

Auf Tour sind Kraftwerk seit Ende Mai. Nach der langen Corona-Pause endlich wieder live - anderen Bands h�rt und sieht man die Freude dar�ber, wieder auf der B�hne zu stehen, an. Bei Kraftwerk stehen Gef�hle nicht im Vordergrund - das geh�rte nie zum Repertoire der Elektroniker. Schon fr�h wurde der Begriff "Menschmaschine" gepr�gt, und als solche platzieren sich die vier M�nner hinter ihren Synthesizern nebeneinander auf der B�hne, ganz klein vor der riesigen LED-Wand.

Am 6. August 2022 aber zeigten die vier Musik-Roboter schlie�lich doch menschliche Regungen auf der B�hne. Bei einem Konzert in Polen brach der Song "Wir sind die Roboter" nach 44 Sekunden ab. Ratlos zuckten die Musiker mit den Schultern, verlie�en ihre Positionen, besprachen sich mit den anderen. Schlie�lich verlie�en sie die B�hne, minutenlang passierte nichts. Das polnische Publikum war gut gelaunt und begann sogar zu singen. Dann kamen die Vier zur�ck auf die B�hne und starteten "Wir sind die Roboter" neu. Nach 44 Sekunden brach es erneut ab, im Publikum gro�es Gejohle. Der Song setzte genau mit der Textstelle wieder ein, die hei�t: "Wir laden unsere Batterie, jetzt sind wir voller Energie" - unfreiwillige Komik.

In Bonn standen bei dem Song keine Menschen auf der B�hne - sondern tats�chlich Roboter.

Gesamtkunstwerk Kraftwerk

Das einzige noch verbliebene Urmitglied von Kraftwerk ist Ralf H�tter, der 2021 seinen 75. Geburtstag feierte. Er ist von Anfang an - Kraftwerk entstand 1970 - der Kopf dieses Musikprojekts, das sich selbst als Gesamtkunstwerk versteht. Die anderen Gr�ndungsmitglieder sind l�ngst ausgestiegen und sein Co-Mastermind Florian Schneider ist 2020 verstorben. Das ikonische Bild von Kraftwerk auf der B�hne bleibt - dank anderer Musiker, die an der Seite von H�tter performen.

Er selbst gibt keine Interviews, f�r ihn soll die Musik, das Gesamtwerk, im Vordergrund stehen, die Menschen dahinter sind nur die ausf�hrenden Roboter. So hat auch niemand von Kraftwerk eine spektakul�re B�hnenshow erwartet, sondern ein Wiederh�ren der Songs, die sie durch die Jahrzehnte begleitet haben.

Das Publikum ist nach dem Bonner Konzert begeistert. Alle Hits sind gespielt worden, immer wieder betonen die Fans in der DW-Umfrage, wie wichtig die Band f�r die Entwicklung der elektronischen Musik war und ist, und wie sehr sie die Zeitreise genossen haben.

Unter den zumeist �lteren Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern sind Alina und Jan, beide 20, und der 21-j�hrige Alexander. Sie haben Kraftwerk durch ihre Eltern kennengelernt. Nach dem Konzert wirken sie beseelt - Sound und Beat haben die jungen Technofans mitgerissen. "Alles was man heute so aus Techno kennt, gab es schon in den 70er Jahren, das ist faszinierend", sagt Alexander.

"Kraftwerk waren ihrer Zeit voraus", meint Jan und findet es schade, dass so wenig Leute in ihrem Alter im Publikum waren. Vielleicht liege es daran, dass die Jugend die alte Musik ihrer Eltern oder gar Gro�eltern nicht h�ren m�chte. "Ich denke, vielen in unserem Alter w�rde das auch gefallen." Alexander meint, dass sich die Musik doch erst mal etwas komisch anf�hle und sich viele gar nicht erst damit besch�ftigen wollen. Alina stimmt zu: "Es sind ja auch sehr lange Songs. Unsere Generation wird durch TikTok darauf trainiert, dass die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne sehr kurz ist, etwa anderthalb Minuten, und wenn man sich dagegen die 14-Minuten-Version von 'Autobahn' anh�rt, dann wird's f�r viele in unserem Alter echt schwierig."

Das Bonner Konzert war das einzige in Deutschland. Die n�chsten Stationen sind Lissabon, Malaga, Florenz und Genua.

Kraftwerk in 3D - a feast of sound, light and colour

The electronic pioneers have been on "3D Tour" since May 2022. Now they played their only concert in Germany in Bonn. DW was there.

The sun has long set, in Bonn's Hofgarten about 25,000 people are waiting for the show of the legendary electronic band. At just before 9 pm, a sound wafts over the grounds. A stylised image of the Kraftwerkers appears on a large video screen. Only after ten minutes do the four men mount the stage in the flesh. An electronic voice greets the audience - and then the music starts. A collage of "Numbers" and "Computer World" gets the audience in the mood for two hours of Kraftwerk: a bombastic sound and a visual spectacle, because the images are projected in 3D onto the video wall behind the musicians - accordingly, the audience wears 3D glasses.
A bit like "Back to the Future

And so the sounds race through the speaker towers, three-dimensional not only in image but also in sound. Pulsating beats, crystal-clear synthesizers, basses that make the body vibrate.

The sounds: old-fashioned yet modern - listening to them, you realise again how much Kraftwerk influenced electronic bands like Depeche Mode or Ultravox and that techno as we know it since the 1990s would probably never have existed without them. With this finely balanced and detailed stage sound, the music doesn't sound like it's 30, 40 or even 50 years old at all. The set list is packed with Kraftwerk hits, from "Autobahn" to "Das Model" - the most successful Kraftwerk hit in the charts in Germany, the audience celebrates it accordingly frenetically - "Trans-Europa-Express", "Radioactivity", "Tour de France" and of course "Wir sind die Roboter".

The video sequences are dominated by numbers, symbols, lines, shapes and colours. In the case of "Autobahn", there are wonderfully old-fashioned-looking animations of cars from the 1970s chugging along the road under a blue sky; in the case of "Tour de France", older black-and-white footage of the bicycle race is shown. The 3D effects are rather restrained, only sometimes notes fly towards the viewers or a robot hand reaches out for them. Further back, hardly anything can be seen of the effects, many take off their glasses. 3D or not - that is not the focus. Experiencing live the music that has accompanied many here for decades is the most important thing about this evening.

Unintentional comedy at the concert in Poland

Kraftwerk have been on tour since the end of May. After the long Corona break, they are finally live again - you can hear and see the joy of being back on stage in other bands. With Kraftwerk, feelings are not in the foreground - that was never part of the electronic musicians' repertoire. The term "man machine" was coined early on, and as such, the four men place themselves behind their synthesizers side by side on stage, very small in front of the huge LED wall.

On 6 August 2022, however, the four music robots finally showed human emotions on stage. At a concert in Poland, the song "We are the robots" broke off after 44 seconds. Perplexed, the musicians shrugged their shoulders, left their positions, discussed with the others. Finally they left the stage, nothing happened for minutes. The Polish audience was in a good mood and even started to sing. Then the four came back on stage and restarted "We are the robots". After 44 seconds it broke off again, big jeering in the audience. The song restarted exactly with the text passage that says: "We charge our battery, now we are full of energy" - unintentional comedy.

In Bonn, there were no humans on stage for the song - but actually robots.

Total work of art Kraftwerk

The only remaining original member of Kraftwerk is Ralf H�tter, who celebrated his 75th birthday in 2021. From the very beginning - Kraftwerk was founded in 1970 - he has been the head of this music project that sees itself as a Gesamtkunstwerk. The other founding members have long since left and his co-mastermind Florian Schneider passed away in 2020. The iconic image of Kraftwerk on stage remains - thanks to other musicians who perform alongside H�tter.

He himself does not give interviews; for him, the music, the complete work, should be in the foreground, the people behind it are only the performing robots. So no one expected a spectacular stage show from Kraftwerk, but rather a rehearsal of the songs that have accompanied them through the decades.
Generation TikTok discovers the music of their parents

The audience is enthusiastic after the Bonn concert. All the hits have been played, again and again the fans emphasise in the DW survey how important the band was and is for the development of electronic music, and how much they enjoyed the journey through time.

Among the mostly older audience members are Alina and Jan, both 20, and 21-year-old Alexander. They got to know Kraftwerk through their parents. After the concert, they seem inspired - the sound and beat have swept the young techno fans away. "Everything you know from techno today was already there in the 70s, it's fascinating," says Alexander.

"Kraftwerk were ahead of their time," says Jan and finds it a pity that there were so few people their age in the audience. Maybe it's because young people don't want to hear the old music of their parents or even grandparents. "I think a lot of people our age would like it too." Alexander says that the music does feel a bit strange at first and that many don't want to bother with it at all. Alina agrees: "They are also very long songs. Our generation is trained by TikTok that the attention span is very short, about one and a half minutes, and if you listen to the 14-minute version of 'Autobahn' on the other hand, it's really difficult for many people our age."

The Bonn concert was the only one in Germany. The next stops are Lisbon, Malaga, Florence and Genoa.
