2 very hot sets performed recently on a very cold Saturday night in NYC early in 2015.
Lots of, as yet, unrecorded tunes being played, although I've heard a few of them going back some years now (Cycle 5, Vibrations, Undercover, Another Time). Samba, Sedated, and Isle of Everything were played at the VV in 2014.I hadn't heard Reaching and a few others before. I tried to give an idea of what the unknown titles were like stylistically in parentheses. If anyone knows their names, please provide that info. Flute and A Shifting Design are the only tunes here that have been on official releases.
Very nice playing throughout. Kurt is using his "flute-y" sound here, so that might throw a few people. Hope it doesn't, because he plays great, and was very inspired. Aaron Parks was really on too, and I really do like Alan Mednard's playing with this band. He really seems to listen well, and he's got some great ideas.
Got there a little later than I'd hoped prior to set 1, so I was near the bar. You'll hear that in the ambient sounds of ice going into drinks and some conversation. The rhythm section is a little less present sounding too in this set. Set 2 found me closer to the stage, and I think that set came out sounding better.
Here's hoping there are plans for some studio recordings of these new tunes (along with some of Kurt's other unrecorded output that we've heard live) in 2015.
Support all of these great artists by paying to see them live and by purchasing their officially released music.
