Day 1 Outside Lands

This was my first time at Outside Lands. I had avoided it in the past for a variety
of reasons but with Ben Harper and Devil Makes Three I decided to give it a try. Doors
opened at 11 but wasn't sure of the line so was there at 9:30 and was 5th on line. No
issue with search or getting the spot I wanted at Sutro stage. The stage was at bottom
of a slight hill and soundboard off to left so grabbed a spot where I was at same level
of stage in front of soundboard. I was totally solo so not sure what to expect with crowd
and was prepared for the worst.

First act was Hurray For The Riff Raff who I had heard of and they were lots of fun.
Since this was the first act the crowd was sparse and I had no one even close by. Next up
was Langhorne Slim & The Law. I had never heard of them and liked their sound. During
the set the singer got off stage briefly and didn't think anything of it. Later on in the
set he goes into the crowd again and shortly afterwards security takes off after him. He
goes past me to myy right and I pretend to be bored looking at my phone as the crowd is
facing in my direction. He then goes past me towards the stage on my left and the next
thing I know he is walking right at me. I look up as he is about 5 feet away and raise
my hand to give a high 5 as he passes me inches away. I wish someone caught that on their
phone because it was a classic moment of the festival. Next up was Laura Marling. I had
never heard of her either but another taping friend said she was good. It was enjoyable.
After that was Angus and Julia Stone from Australia. By now the crowd had filled in. It
was a very young crowd and I actually moved back 15 to 20 feet closer to two people I had
chatted with who were more my age. This gave me blockers from behind. I enjoyed the set
and can see why the crowd had grown. At this festival the people are always either coming
or going so crowd issues could change by the minute. Overall it wasn't too bad. The next
act is Milky Chance and the crowd was very full. They really had a following and the
crowd was really into them. They are a German band with somewhat of a Brit Pop sound.

Last up was Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals which was the one act I was there to see.
After 9 hours I tried a bathroom run given there was 30 minutes. After 20 minutes of
waiting for a blue box I realized it was going to take 20 more minutes so I rushed back.
I was using a new recorder that had a different feel than my old one. I started everything
and put the hold on. When I put it the recorder in the hold must have slipped off and the
recorder turned off. As the crowd wasn't full and I was really enjoying the set I didn't
check the recorder. Big mistake since when I finally looked before the last song the recorder
was off. I had 20 seconds of crowd noise. I did capture the last song but it was a real
disappointment. the set was really good and their is a webcast but I failed to deliver the goods.
