Notes:

Last month when Leslie West passed away, Leslie Mountain uploaded this show on TTD, which dandrew then re-tracked for a TTD upload. That was sourced from AIFF files provided by JoeRay converted to FLAC.

Dave H, aka Mountain, has stepped forward with his cassette of this FM broadcast. It is the same rebroadcast, and from the same source (the tape flip in the same exact spot in the drum solo during "Voodoo Chile" on both recordings was the giveaway). Other than suffering less dropouts, Dave's tape differed from the other uploads in two places. The less signfificant of the two is that his tape only retained the very end of the DJ intro. The more important thing is that his tape has the encore that was missing from the original broadcast. Other than the first fifteen seconds here borrowed from the TTD upload, the rest of this comes from Dave's tape.

Dave actually attended this show right up front, and while he didn't record, his eyewitness account was that the show started off with "Never in My Life" -- that first song regrettably never made it on air because lightning from a winter thunderstorm hit the station's transmission tower during that moment, so until an audience recording of this show turns up, this is going to be as complete as you're gonna get. Another person in attendance at the show, who Leslie points out before starting the show, was former Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley. No surprise there, as Jerry had been working a stint as an on-air personality on WNCX (the same rock station that broadcast this show) for a few years at this point after leaving the Pie.

By the following month, Leslie put Mountain back together (keeping Richie in the band and bringing Corky Laing back into the fold) for one of their many reunions, including an appearance on Dennis Miller's late night TV show.

But let's go back now 29 years ago to the day, and revisit this show. The major guitar workout here is on the sixteen minutes of "Voodoo Chile" where Leslie wrings his Steinberger every which way to throw in bits of "Superstition, "The Wind Cries Mary," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "The Star Spangled Banner," and "Whole Lotta Love" before the piece ends on a drum solo.

For the encore of "Red House," Leslie asks Jerry Shirley to come up and play drums in the middle of the song. No eulogy needed here for Leslie, as what Jerry says on the mic before he walks off the stage is poignant enough. Leslie plays "Theme for an Imaginary Western" here for Felix Pappalardi and Steve Marriott, who were gone by the time of this show. Now go ahead and play this show back for Jack Bruce and Leslie West.

A mountain of gratitude to Dave H. for sharing this tape.

Enjoy,
