Although Lili Añel is not a household name, since her arrival in Philadelphia in 2004, she has developed a devoted following in and around Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey and Delaware. In spite of being an independent artist, her last two CDs made the pages of JazzTimes magazine, among others and although Lili doesn’t claim herself to be a straight ahead Jazz artist, her music is infused with Jazz overtones. I am a huge fan and have gotten a hold of some nice, (mostly soundboard) live recordings of both acoustic and band performances. Lili has been compared to artists such as Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and oddly enough Steely Dan. Some of that may be true, but Lili is a unique artist with her own songwriting style. I will post one acoustic and one band performance for now.

This is Lili's debut at the Tin Angel where she opened for Essra Mohawk (Frank Zappa fame) and was delighted to finally be performing at one of Philly's premiere listening rooms. Although the majority of the crowd was there for Essra, it was obvious that Lili had won them over. Lili ended her set with "The Way Out" and the audience did the unusual and screamed for an encore from the opening act!

Enjoy!
