THE GENE POOLE COLLECTION VOL. 68

Here's the latest installment of the Gene Poole Collection, a random wellspring of recordings which have recently surfaced. To paraphrase Lou: This is gonna go on for a while, so we should get used to each other, settle back, pull up your cushions, whatever else you have with you that makes life bearable in what has already been the start of trying decade...

Some of Gene's handiwork has probably been heard by your very ears before, for the most part via the Stonecutter Archives, but this is the first major unearthing of tapes direct from the legend himself. As promising as that may seem, it's best to let the surprises hit as they are shared. The trade-off to the prolific taping on Gene's part is that the expectations for a perfect track record would be unrealistic and unfair. There will be instances of incomplete recordings, caused by late arrivals to gigs, recorder and mic malfunctions, and other assorted foibles as would befall any mortal taper. There will be times where a master from another source exists which could be superior. For the most part, Gene recorded with a variety of mics and recorders, and many shows suffered from wire dropouts, so that only one channel was extant in the capture. Due warning about the past imperfect given and out of the way, credit should be given where due as well -- for many shows thought lost forever, it's exciting to discover that many of these even in incomplete form have now cropped up.

The transfers, the audio fixes, and the research all have required some lead time -- many tapes had scant info (sometimes just the name of the artist/band, with no date listed for the performance). Needless to say, gear documentation is virtually nil -- if we wait around for that precise detail to be forthcoming, nothing from the collection would probably see the light of day.

We're going out on the Island this time for Linda Ronstadt's set at the Concert for Nuclear Disarmament in Nassau Coliseum. We haven't seen Linda since Volume 8, so she's due for another visit, following from the prior TGPC volume of one Peter Asher-produced act to another. Jackson Browne was up first at this benefit, followed by Linda. James Taylor, who organized the show, was the third and final artist on the bill.

This time we have a true mono recording, no external stereo mics were utilized; both channels were laid down back in 1982 as you're hearing it here... almost. Gene claimed that because of the nature of the event, it was no big deal to openly bring in a boogie box. It explained a lot about why this tape had its pitch consistently slow for its entire duration, whereas most speed problems with Gene's tapes would occur at the end of the show (i.e. when the batteries were depleted, or with the mishap at the Waitresses show -- see Vol. 65). While the pitch was easy enough to dial in, there are still sonic limitations with the choice of equipment and media (go easy, it was just a ghetto blaster in use, after all). For what it is though, the recording is stable with no dropouts; the occasional blink of a tape transport slip and a quick tape flip in "Livin' in the U.S.A." are about its only physical quibbles. The reverb of the Coliseum is apparent, but it lends to the ambience of the music and the vocals pick up really well, without much intrusive crowd noise.

There were a few anti-nuke shows during this time, including a larger event at Madison Square Garden in 1979, in which Linda did not participate. When introducing Nicolette Larson, Linda predicts that her cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be with You" will end up being a big hit when it comes out, but the single never cracked the Top 40 when it was released a month after this show, and ultimately contributed to Warner Brothers dropping Nicolette from the label.

There are a few anecdotes and recollections about this show that are either apocryphal or perhaps took place three days later at the rally in Central Park... or Gene just didn't commit to tape. One is that Billy Joel reportedly showed up to play on "Heat Wave," but if so, there's no acknowledgment of him from either the audience or Linda. On the contrary, there are roars from the crowd during "Desperado" so perhaps the piano man joined on the ivories for that number. The main anecdote that accompanies this particular show is that Linda had flown in by helicopter and announced near the top of this set that it was great to be back in New Jersey, generating boos from the audience. When someone in the band races over to inform her that she is actually in Long Island, she cheerfully apologizes and then proceeds to win everyone over with a performance so riveting that her geographical gaffe is completely forgotten if not forgiven by the end of the set. While nothing here corroborates that exchange, there seems to be ample conclusive evidence here that she brought the house down.

Enjoy,
