Fog On The Danube:
Lindisfarne made one of their occasional forays into Europe in June
as headliners at the Vienna folk festival. They flew out a couple of days early
to play a pre-festival gig in Graz, Austria's second city, whose normally sedate
concert hall was soon reverberating to the strains of Lindisfarne classics
and over a thousand new fans in full cry.
Elated by this, the band enjoyed a day off in Vienna, assuming the guise of tourists
and viewing the capital from the Big Wheel made famous by Orsen Welles' classic
The Third Man. Arriving in high spirits at the festival the next day,Lindisfarne
met with a shock. They had heard that in previous years, the festival had been held
on a picturesque island in the Danube. Someone had neglected to tell them that this year,
as an economy measure, the event had been moved to a field adjoining a disused slaughterhouse
in the worst part of town, a location worthy of the Third Man himself.
