When I was a lad, Lindisfarne's Christmas Shows were engrained as part of the traditional Geordie Christmas, Multiple, sell-out nights at "God's Awn Haall" were something you looked forward to participating in, marking the start of the seasonal festivities proper. They were riotous fun, and set you up with that warm feeling that you still look back on with fondness decades later.
For the second year in a row, Ray Jackson has handpicked some well-suited sorts to put on a series of shows reminding us of "the good old days". Last year, I didn't make the effort to go, and if I'm honest with myself I was probably a little cynical about the venture. Having heard a number of recordings kindly shared in these parts (along with a recently released official CD culled from last year's run) I'm now firmly of the belief that it's a genuine attempt to remind us of what we had, feel good about life and times gone by when everything felt...just a bit simpler.
Of course the shows are steeped in nostalgia, but for all the occasional "sugary elements" it's a real joy to get a flavour of what we often took forgranted back in the day. It's not the original cast, but it's done with integrity.
A packed City Hall took a little while to get going "properly" (we're no longer "bairns"), and a great time was had by all. Good mix of songs, something for everyone.
If I had a gripe, for my tastes the drummer, Paul Thompson, was a little "heavy handed" at times. On the plus side, Dave Hull-Denholm's singing bears more than a passing resemblance to Alan Hull's.

Special mention for tempusfugit, to whom all of us Lindisfarne Fans owe a growing debt. Thank you.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

I'm ready for Christmas now...
