First, it was great to see Little Feat archivist Chris Cafiero again at the show. What a road warrior! It's nice to find someone like myself who is so passionate about music and live recording. Now, on to the show at hand. To see if this type of capture is worthwhile, I experimented with using the DISC recording technique for the first time at this show. The venue is basically a large mobile stage in the middle of a big open field. The winds were blowing 20-30 m.p.h. with gusts above 40 m.p.h., so I used two windscreens on each mic. Even at only 30 feet from the stacks there was still some phasing caused by the excessive winds. The slight phasing can be heard in the final mix if you listen on headphones but is not noticeable when played through loudspeakers. The Rode NT3 is a perfect mic for simplified field recording. It can be powered by an internal 9 volt battery. It has a wide (20Hz-20kHz) and flat response. Its hypercardioid design rejects off-axis sound very well, and most importantly, the mics signal is so hot that you can run it directly into your recorders line-in without using a mic-pre! No phantom power or preamp required? Perfect! I've tried to keep everything as simple as possible; each rig is made up of only 4 parts: 1 Mic, 1 Stand, 1 Cable, and 1 Recorder. All items for both rigs, except the mic stands, can be put into a medium sized fanny pack. Because of a fenced-in Gold Circle Seating Area in front of the stage, I had to put the mic stands 5 feet outside of a direct line with the stacks, or move the mics back to 50 feet from the stage. I went with the first option, closer to the stacks with less wind phasing but not quite a direct head-on aim at the stacks. The mics can be seen in photos of the show that I have included. Each R-09 recorded in dual mono, that is, the same input signal was delivered to both left and right channels. After time syncing the 2 dual mono sources in Soundforge, one channel was deleted from each source and the remaining 2 left and right channels were mixed together to make the final stereo mix. Enjoy!
