Doinker's One-Off "Live In The Studio" Compilation FM and Pre-FM

This is a compilation of various artists performing their own material live in the studio. It was taken from a variety of different source cassettes and pre-fm materials. Sets range from just a few minutes to about half an hour. There's also a small selection of accompanying interviews with other artists as sort of a bonus as they can't be readily seperated from the live bits.

New York's WNEW-FM (sadly, no longer in existence) hosted several shows where the artist would come in, play one or two songs live in the studio (sometimes more), and get to promote their latest LP or local tour concert. These gatherings were relaxed, frequently quite funny, and also featured one or more songs from an official release. Those tracks have been of course deleted. Among the deejays you will hear are a rather over-excited Pat St. John, Scottso (Scott Muni) who later became a sports announcer and has recently passed away, David Monahan, and others.

The series entitled "Live At Five" was generally heard by New York commuters in their cars trying to get home after work on either the New Jersey Turnpike, or on the "Worlds Longest Parking Lot" - the Long Island Expressway. There were also special events, such as the Moody Blues' acoustic in-studio Christmas pre-show (with no mellotron, either!). Either way, you got to hear something different and spicy.

These shows were taped with whatever kinds or cassettes I had handy at the time. WNEW-FM reception was always spotty where I lived, so there is sometimes a bit of hiss as well. I don't have exact dates for some of these shows, just the portion of the month. If you know, please comment.

The pre-fm sources used are radio-station broadcast LPs. "The Robert Klein Radio Show" was a comedy/variety music radio program from the early 1980's which featured a short monologue, a featured artist introduction and interview, then some "special guest" would be introduced who would play live in the studio. The "special guest' would then also interact with the featured artist and Mr. Klein, and the 'monologue theme' would be repeated throughout the program. The funny thing was, the featured artist didn't play live at all on the shows I have, only the guest. The featured artist would have commercial material played instead, and that material always gave more insight to the interview. Unfortunately, I can't bring that to you.. you'll have to buy it on your own.

The featured artists this time are Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe of Rockpile, and the "special guest" is Moon Martin and the Ravens. MMATR were a way, way underappreciated band who made many albums and who didn't get the success they deserved. Mr. Martin's dark lyrics about relationships are just as clever today as they were when they were first heard. To appreciate their music, you'd have to imagine Eric Clapton and Michael Kamen's "Edge of Darkness" minus the orchestra and set to a rock beat. Since the program flows together and the monologue material is referenced again and again during the interviews, the Rockpile portion and the opening have been left intact.

Statement: All interviews have music-related content. All officially-released material has been deleted. All commercials have been deleted.

Finally, to end it all is an odd "Innerview" radio show excerpt featuring George Thorogood playing an old Hank Williams tune live in Jim Ladd's living room.

This is all I could readily find for this compilation. Hope you like it.
