Lonesome Bob Chaney was one of Nashville's greatest songwriters of the 1990s, a title he probably would have been better-known for if he hadn't kept writing non-country-radio-friendly lyrics like "I'll find salvation in the things that matter/Go tell it on the mountain, leave me alone." His two CDs, "Things Fall Apart" and "Things Change," are both rocking and brilliant, and well worth tracking down.

This was recorded on the "Things Change" tour at the Rodeo Bar, a terrific little restaurant/bar/performance space in Manhattan. I was a bit far back in the crowd, but the cardioid mics helped bring the sound nice and close. He had an excellent backing band, though I've forgotten who was in it now except for Steve Goulding (of the Mekons and the Waco Brothers, both of whom have covered Bob tunes) on drums.
