Hello everyone,
First of all: As I write these lines I am thinking: How will the Lou Reed/VU fan community - or the many music fans - react to the Seed?
Will the joy be "das geht durch die Decke“ (as we say in Germany), now that this legendary concert is finally available in "appealing" - i.e. excellent - quality?
Or is it rather the case that the many Lou Reed heads will just smile wearily because so much has already been written about THIS particular show and it's all over?
Or are there so many '79 recordings: better, more complete and a better performance by the band?
Maybe the '79 tour isn't its best or most exciting? (and incomplete at that)
Recorder 1 of rather mediocre quality ('WARNING: poor quality - for afficionados only...') I read in the txt file of this recording) has everything you need to know about this particular show?
Be that as it may: Anyone who wants to listen to this new Recorder 2: It's all right with me, and anyone can record it however they want.
Here we go:
Here IS a new and uncirculated source of the famous Lou Reed show from 6 April 1979 in Offenbach.
I haven't heard this recording for over 20 years and recently rediscovered it in my vault. What a pleasure.
The show was recorded on 2x90min BASF LH cassettes (orange label). Each cassette cost 4.45 DM (approx. 2.20 Euro/ approx. 2.30 US Dollars), as you can see from the stickers on the sleeves. That wasn't cheap in those days.
The show and the recording are excellent in my opinion. You can feel the tension with 'every fibre' during the concert and, as has often been written and reported, the audience was very excited. You could almost say 'there was something in the air'. This aggression can now be heard very clearly throughout most of the concert.
I particularly like 'Coney Island Baby', 'Berlin', 'Perfect Day', 'Ill be Your Mirror' and 'Waiting For The Man'.
The first lines of 'Sad Song' are missing from the recording. Also, both Tapers obviously had similar thoughts about hitting the 'stop button' when it got 'down to business' and the show was obviously over.
Lou goes off' is what you would read in the script ;)
This recording is about 25 seconds longer (from the beginning of 'The Bed') but with no new insights. There is no smashing of furniture to be heard😉 Sorry guys.
I decided to label the 6 minutes after 'The Kids' and before 'Berlin' as an extra track. Nothing was cut.
In the meantime, this concert has also attracted so much attention that it has been 'honoured' with some German press reviews (on the anniversary). Google it.
Back in 1979, an Offenbach newspaper ran the headline:
American rock singer provokes audience: Town hall reduced to rubble".
This concert was also honoured by the release of an LP (not of the concert):
Quote: 'present a concept album, a fictional performance, an homage and a fabulation about Lou Reed and being a fan yourself'.
If this is translated into German, you can google everything.
So this concert seems to have arrived in the mainstream. Maybe so.
Enclosed is my poster of this concert. Enjoy this timeless document.
And all the Seeds are dedicated to you!
