This show was part of a short summer tour of Europe - a mixture of medium-sized festivals and smaller venues like this one near Newcastle in the north of England. The set list is really nice, Lou's voice is in reasonable shape, and all the songs are extended with lengthy instrumental mid- (and end-) sections. Garry and I drove down from Edinburgh and he managed to get a pretty good tape of the whole show - listening to it again now just reminds me how much I enjoyed it at the time. Personally, I could have done without "Tell It To Your Heart" and "Twilight Reeling", but apart from that every song's a keeper. Surely the longest version of "Ecstacy" that I've ever heard! And a really nice version of "Coney Island Baby".

After the show, Lou was happy to talk with fans and sign memorabilia at the stage door (as usual in my experience, contrary to his reputation!). I was wearing my "Sally Can't Dance" badge but he didn't notice.....those were different times.

JANUARY 2014 ADDITIONAL NOTES

While filing some old cuttings I found my original notes from this concert, so I've tidied them up and reproduced them below:

#######################

Nice venue ( ~1700 seats), sold out but with no obvious advertising or indication that Lou is playing tonight.

Lou onstage ~ 30 mins late. Carrying guitar and wearing what looks like a shell suit. Looking thin and fragile but steady on his feet. Same guitar all night.

Tony inside an acoustic "cage"again (probably because he's so loud?). Rob playing a big "stand up" bass. Some guy on electronics/sound effects? Fernando on bass and guitar and vocals. Master Ren during encore

Dorita: long version extended with much feedback guitar from Lou
What's Good: bit disjointed, Lou asks for vocal level to be increased. Words not always clear.
Sword: band and Lou still a bit "untogether", but good version.
Egg Cream: OK, not a fave of mine but the band were obviously enjoying it.
Ecstacy: V good. band together and several extended instrumental breaks (mostly Fernando unfortunately). Longest version?
Dirty Blvd: good version overall but vocal delivery not always clear. (apart from the hook, the lyrics and vocal delivery are what make this song, so don't feel it works so well when "shouted" by Lou.
Heart: not a favourite of mine, but Lou seems to be very ford of it. Lot of vocals by Fernando
WFTM: a 4 minute thrash in a similar instrumental style as Bowie and The Spiders in 1972. Driven along by Tony's almost military drumbeat. Nice fluid guitar by Lou. Would be better if there was more guitar by Lou!
WLWH: great to have it in the set but another 4 min thrash at high speed. What a drum sound! Fernando missed several backing vocal cues but Lou never missed a beat. Over too soon.
Who Am I: Lou shouting the words again. I would have much preferred to have "Jesus".
Coney: highlight of the night for me. lovely arrangement and tender vocal by Lou. Ended in a 5 min guitar thrash.
Twilight: crowd pleaser. good performance . BIG guitars.
Mystic: excuse for Lou to go wild with his guitar
Perfect Day: good vocal by Lou and good band performance
