boombox's notes july 2016:
Love last played Frome on July 10th 2005, nearly eleven years ago, so I had had a long time to wait to see Johnny and the boys again. I was so impressed back then, I went to see them again in Oxford a couple of days later and did the same job outside The Zodiac telling people Arthur wasn't there, but that the band would do the songs proud. And they all did again this time round on a tour put on to honour the 10th anniversary of Arthur's death. Rusty laid down the rhythm guitar and belted out the songs more confidently than Arthur did towards the end, Mike played all the flute and trumpet parts flawlessly as he did on the tours without the string and trumpet players, Daddyo and Dave provided a rock solid rhythm section and the latter also contributed lead vocals on 'Bummer In The Summer' and managed some simultaneous harmonica and one handed bass playing in 'Signed D.C.'! As for Johnny, his lead playing and his vocals were the best I've heard from him. They'd even learned some 'new' songs they'd not done with Arthur. To cap it all, they all came round afterwards to sign and pose for photos, those meeting them for the first time remarking just what nice blokes they all are.
Only slight downers on the evening were the clown of a local promoter who stopped me from videoing the set, despite my having permission from the band, two ignorant harpies who thought it was OK to shout and laugh from the middle of the set, causing me to have to move position, and the childish fool who thought it was fun to 'woo woo' at the end of every song or band comment. That said, the recording came out pretty well, though I have had to do some work on reducing a gunshot clapper near me during the first part and as for the aforementioned screamer, please note, some of his outbursts were so loud, they have been excised completely, meaning that if anyone wants to matrix this with other sources, you will need to get my raw files. You will notice a slight change in tone when I moved after 'The Good Humor Man', but it's not too detracting.
Please support the band by buying the merch (the new Burg Herzberg 2005 CD is very good) and make sure they and promoters knows they have a receptive audience here, who'd love to see them back. Next year is the 40th anniversary of 'Forever Chnages' too, so with luck....
