Taper Notes to RustList:

I got a chance to catch Lucinda Williams in Dallas last Thursday when
she stopped by on her way down to Austin for the ACL. Some of you
probably know my obsession with her in past few years. I was
catching her anytime she was within 200 miles of me and collecting
every show i could back in 2001 for the Essence tour comp that is
widely spread around here.

The Gypsy is not my favorite venue for comfort. It's a big room with
a noisy bar that is almost as big as the room itself and there is no
place to sit and be able to see the stage. People that go there are
mostly there to socialize, drink and smoke. I think they use the band
as background noise for the most part. But I still go there because
most my favorite artist like to play there for some reason. It took
me a while, but i have found the sweet spot for sound in the venue.
It's right under the mirror ball about 10 yards from the stage and
centered. Being in the middle of the room i am far enough away from
the bar that the talking does not over power the music, and most
people crammed in around me are also paying attention to the music.

Anyway it had been a little over a year sense i last saw her at the
Newport Folk Fest where she played a nice set, and even had Steve
Earle play "Concrete and Barbed Wire" with her which they recorded
together on the Car Wheels record. It seems almost every time i catch
Lou she plays a special or inspired set. The first time i ever saw
her she debut here "Essence" material at the Caravan of Dreams in
Fort Worth and another time she debut her "World Without Tears"
material at Bass Hall. I guess I'm just lucky to live in a area
where she feels she can go out on a limb and just play what she
want's; and in the case of the Gypsy Tea Room show last Thursday,
as long as she wants!

By the time the night ended at 1:45 am Friday morning we were treated
to 8 new songs and over three hours of classic Lucinda Williams. I
was one of about 50 people left in the hall by the time she left the
stage. The place was packed at the start of the night! I guess that
proves my theory that most people don't go to the Gypsy for the music
alone. Lucinda didn't seem to give a damn though, if anything she
seemed to liked the intimacy of how the evening ended and that we
were all paying attention.

Lou's voice on Thursday was better than i have ever heard. Some
people might not like her voice because it is unique and not the most
technically sound voice, but for her song writing style it's perfect.
A bluesy growl that drives home the story's she's singing about.
I could also tell the time she has spent on the road the "The Love
Band" it has developed into a well oiled musical monster. Doug
Pettibone, Taras and Jimmy Christie seem to be totally in tune with
Lucinda.

It's hard for me to put into words the epic show i witnessed, but i
really don't need to because i taped the thing. I guess if your
interested in Lucinda and you want to find out more about this show
you will be wise to seek out this recording.
I have a few burned for anyone willing to help pass it on. I'm
really not trading much anymore but if anyone has any good recent
Greenday shows i would love to get a hold of a quality sounding show.
Otherwise these are freebies if you can pass them on or load them up
on a BT site. Send me a email off list with how you plan to help
spread it and i'll choose and let you know.
