Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real
"Willie's son"
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 2, 2009
Recorded from KBOO FM a local all volunteer radio station. There are always reception problems and drops in sound from this station. Maybe it's just where I live. Anyway, I have tried to find and fix all the drops in sound. This year not all the first day was broadcast. Not sure why. Etta James canceled and was replaced by Keb Mo' but his recording contract wouldn't allow his broadcast.
Please understand that I don't know all these bands and it's hard for me to come up with all the set list's. I'll do my best and ask for help when needed.
Linage: FM tuner straight to HD>CD Wave>EAC with SBE's fixed>TLH>FLAC>torrent.
This is a big undertaking for me every year and I love doing it. Please leave your comments, I enjoy reading them. Enjoy the tunes, twofthrs
Lukas Nelson & Promise of Real
Rarely does a young musician get to meet or know the legends that have molded the landscape of music and its elaborate history. As the son of American music icon WILLIE NELSON, Lukas Nelson had the rare opportunity to experience playing with such legends as NEIL YOUNG, KRIS KRISTOFERSON and BOB DYLAN. These influences played a natural role in the development of his musical foundationSouthern Blues and Texas Folk Rock. However, like all artists and musicians, Lukas desired a unique sound and style that could satisfy his own musical soul.
Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Maui, Hawaii, Lukas was exposed to a wider variety of musical cultures than most. Ultimately his inspiration would come from the soulful and psychedelic guitar sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Lukas was captivated by the works of these two legends and taught himself to play guitar listening to their music. These rhythmic experiences would complete his musical foundation and with an added touch of the music culture from the islands, Lukas would create a sound that is uniquely his own.
Collaboration quickly developed with childhood friend Tato Melgar, a gifted percussionist from Uruguay and Argentina. Tatos experience with Afro-Cuban and South American sounds provided the synergy that would set the duo on their way. This collaboration created a rare sonic combination resulting in bands Harmonic Tribe and 40 Points. Eventually the duo would join forces with longtime friends from Southern California, bassist Merlyn Kelly and drummer Anthony LoGerfo, whose musical backgrounds range from jazz to hard rock. Though their backgrounds were vastly different, the four found they had a shared affinity toward improvisation that would provide a common and unifying bond within the group, and in the process Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real was formed.
The music of Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real creates a contemporary emotion deeply connected to its various roots. Their sound is reminiscent of traditional rock and roll merged with blues, psychedelia, hints of country and a touch of anything else that works. POTR has found its niche for open expression and improvisation within the confines of progressive art that is both timely and timeless. Lukas (quoting Jimi Hendrix) states simply, you should live your life as if it is your art exhibit something as individuals each band member has pledged to do, and their personalities are reflected in the music. This spirit is further conveyed visually through Lukas brother Micah Nelson, who often paints on stage as the band performs, a collaboration that resulted in the artwork for the new EP.
The Brandos Paradise Sessions EP
In January 2009, the band entered the studio with producer and long time mentor John Avila (Oingo Boingo, The Mutaytor) to record the bands first musical offering, the Brandos Paradise Sessions EP. The album was recorded at Avilas home studio Brandos Paradise and the name of the record is an homage to the studios positive, family inspired feel that provided a perfect setting for the band to free-flow and jam. What resulted is an album consisting of one-take experiences with a sound that makes the listener feel as if theyre in the studio.
The Brandos Paradise Sessions EP will be available Summer 2009
