The Lumineers
Opening for The Civil Wars
The Sage, Gateshead, UK
3rd November 2012

A great opening set by the Lumineers. It probably was better, certainly more enthusiastic than the set which followed by The Civil Wars. It was almost as long as well. The version of Ho Hey which was performed on the night was done acoustically and involved the band wandering around the ground floor of the Sage. I was leaning over from front row just above the stage on the first level so it's pretty quiet and it's been left that way to keep the levels of the entire concert as they were.

The beauty of the Sage (apart from it's very impressive external and internal structure) is that the sound is pretty much perfect whichever seat you occupy. Your views are pretty good too. It can be so perfect as to be a little sterile at times but certainly a lot better than many of the larger venues.

It would appear that this was the night that things reached boiling point for The Civil wars. their performance lacked a lot of what they had going for them earlier in the year. Their set had no encore and a couple of days later they announced that because of "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition" they were unable to "continue as a touring entity at this time." The remainder of their shows were cancelled.
Civil Wars set to follow.
