Lyle Lovett's frist three LP's are widely considered three of the strongest semi-country releases of the late 1980's. The tour in support of the latest of the three, the yet to be released "Lyle Lovett And His Large Band" rolled into Dallas to play the short lived venue "Tommy's" located in Deep Ellum. Happily, this was the only show I ever taped at Tommy's, general admission, standing room only and a very challenging capture.

It was a crowded sold out show and frankly I got lazy and out of the 100's of shows I taped this was one of three I got nailed at the door going in, when asked what I had under my jacket I decided saying a camera would go down much easier than tape deck. With a simple, "not allowed" from the door guy and "take it to your car" I went packing and packing I did. Back to the car and the usual process of strapping the deck to my back, mics down the back of the pants, tapes and batteries stashed in the jacket pockets and socks.
Once inside, I knew hitting the bathroom and waiting in an extremely long line would likely lead to missing the start of the show, so another tense moment as I had to unpack the whole thing on the floor, standing, with a friend doing her best to keep me hidden in plain sight. From then on it was pretty smooth sailing though taping a show standing the whole time with the size of the deck and mics was always a pain and extremely taxing.

This is the first digital transfer of my master tapes and un-circulated in the torrent era.

Enjoy,
