boombox's notes november 2017:

After the wonderful night they put on in Acapela last year, this was one I was not going to miss, a feeling shared by many who had travelled from all over the UK. Billed only as a Magenta gig, it soon became apparent that it was going to be "& Friends". No Pete Jones this time, but in addition to Karla and Claudine returning on oboe and cello, we got Nigel and Angharrad who have worked with Rob on his 'Sanctuary' projects and the one and only Les Penning, recorder virtuoso and collaborator on a number of Mike Oldfield's early albums. Even Rob's young son came out to start the proceedings, accompanied by Dad and Chris. Announced as two one hour sets, we actually got two and a half hours - and that was without two planned solo pieces by Chris, which were dropped no doubt due to concerns over running time. As for the show, I'll let the quality of the performances speak for themselves. The band were running cameras, as last year, but only two songs ever saw the light of day on youtube - given some of the antics on the night (this is a band who really enjoy themselves on stage!), I'm not sure how much of this year's show will be put out there. However, this should give you a taster of these excellent musicians, and if they do ever release the show, I'll be first in the queue to buy it.

The sound is always excellent at the venue and the recording is very clear, though I did add just a gentle mid boost. There a few clicks from time to time as Chris and Rob changed guitars and pedals, but other than fades and bringing the volume up and excising a few loud bumps, that's about it. Audience applause was VERY enthusiastic, but I've left it alone. I've also done two sets of artwork for those like me, who still burn to CDR - one folder for each set and a combined one if you want to squeeze it all on two discs.

Enjoy!!
