Mary Chapin Carpenter
The Mountain Winery, Saratoga, CA
July 21, 2001 (Saturday Evening)

Ive long been a fan of good singer-songwriters, and Ive recorded a number of shows over the years for my own listening pleasure. Since none of us is getting any younger, Ive decided to share what Ive got, beginning with this one my first upload.

The Mountain Winery is one of the most beautiful outdoor venues in the U.S., and Mary Chapin Carpenter and her band were in a great mood on this second night of a two-nighter in Saratoga. She was touring in support of her Time*Sex*Love album with probably her best band line-up ever, including the phenomenal Duke Levine on lead and masterful brit Dave Mattacks on drums.

It was unseasonably cold in the Saratoga hills that Saturday night, which Mary Chapin good-naturedly commented on several times. We were sitting in the middle of a boisterous group of neon-wearing Bay Area MCC fans whod been following MC from show to show in California, and this was their final stop. They were excited and chatty between songs but thankfully didnt talk over the music much. It was a great show, with a vibe that was fun and light, and superb musicianship.

SPECIAL NOTES:

1. At the end of CD1/Track 02, Mary Chapins reference to the Greek Chorus was directed at MCC fan club group.

2. Towards the end of CD1/Track 06, the lost sheep MC asks about is a female member of the fan group who was in a wheelchair and had to sit in the disabled seating area of the venue. At the end of the show, MC sent word to her, inviting her backstage for a meet-and-greet. The chair-bound fan was thrilled.

3. Before recording the song The Long Way Home, MCC had been performing it in shows with the line, make a swell martini but later changed the lyric to make a joyful noise. The fan group at the show were a bit irked at the lyric change and during the song held up a large poster with a drawing of a full martini glass. While singing the song, MC saw the poster, smiled and sang make a swell martini. Hence, the joyful noise from the fans at that moment (CD2/Track 04).
