Mary Chapin Carpenter
The Mountain Winery
Saratoga, CA
June 19, 2004 (Saturday Evening)

Mary Chapin Carpenter and her band spent the summer of 2004 touring in support of her then-new album, Between Here And Gone. June 19th found them once again at the Mountain Winery, a most lovely outdoor venue in the Saratoga hills. And as was also true during their previous visit, it was an unseasonably cold summer night in Saratoga. But MC and the band were in a collectively great mood and made light of the brisk weather.

The audience was ready for fun as well. We were seated next to a boisterous Bay Area MCC fan club (perhaps a couple dozen of them), all decked out in colorful neon and hoisting their mascot -- a large, plastic pink flamingo with the legs being a long, black flashlight that illuminated the inside of the bird after it became dark.

Mary Chapin and Company put on a great show, playing most of the songs from Between Here And Gone along with some of her radio hits, including a rare performance of Mark Knopflers The Bug, which Mary Chapin had covered on her 1992 album Come On Come On. The band was in top form, despite the absence of guitarist Kevin Barry who had just rushed home to the east coast for the birth of his child. But remaining guitarist James Harra rose to the occasion and filled in amazingly well.

With great songs, journeymen musicians and humorously charming banter from Mary Chapin, a wonderful time was had by all.

SPECIAL NOTES:

1. Seeing as how this venue is also a winery, there were a few members of the audience who imbibed perhaps a bit too much of the grape. One guy seated in the first few rows kept calling out to Mary Chapin between songs and then apologizing (Mary! I love you! (PAUSE) Im sorry!). Hes especially audible during CD1/Track 10, and youll hear how MC good-naturedly handled it. And an obviously tipsy woman seated near THAT guy became slightly obnoxious with her call-outs, notably during CD2/Tracks 01, 02 and 09.

2. Mary Chapin had some fun with the Bay Area fan club, too. During CD1/Track 10 she accuses them of over-enjoying the vino: I see the people with the neons around their neck had a little wine hoisting that flamingo! Im sure that flamingo had a little wine, too! Then during the final song (I Feel Lucky), MC sang a reference to their mascot: bought that flamingo a new car! and I think Ill flip a coin I bet that birdll win!

3. The bonus tracks are from other California shows during that same week, including Bryan Adams Back To You, a partial I Am A Rock by Paul Simon, Lennon/McCartneys Two Of Us and Elysium, another track from Between Here And Gone. Although the sound quality is a notch below the excellent quality of the Saratoga show, these tracks were added due to their being interesting and not performed in Saratoga.

Enjoy, but needless to say, dont sell, alter or upload this recording anywhere. And please be a supportive fan. Go out to see Mary Chapin Carpenter and purchase her many excellent CDs. Thanks.
