JEMS is thrilled to launch another round of recordings in collaboration with legendary Boston-area taper, Steve Hopkins. Over the years, Hopkins has lent us several or his key master tapes to make what we hope are definitive transfers of his outstanding work which I regard as some of the highest quality audience recordings of major artists done in the 1970s.
Steve handpicked nine shows for this batch of new, high resolution transfers and mastering, and our new series begins with Southern Rock pioneers Marshall Tucker Band tearing it up at the Orpheum in March 1976.
The band was on tour to support their August 1975 album Searchin' For A Rainbow, four songs from which feature here: "Fire On The Mountain," "Can't See You," "Bound and Determined" and the title track. MTB also preview "Long Hard Ride" which would provide the name of their 1976 follow up.
The Orpheum in Boston is a 2700 seater and Marshall Tucker Band played two shows this night, this being the early set. That means 5,400 tickets sold in the market assuming a sell out, which is pretty impressive for the South Carolina band.
Steve is in a good taping position with a cooperative crowd and gets his typical excellent results on this one-hour set that's nearly impossible to resist. The playing is marvelous. Hopkins' recording has circulated before, but we hope the azimuth- and pitch-adjusted transfer and careful mastering provide a modest upgrade to previous versions. The Marshall Tucker Band's late show will be coming along, too.
Thanks once again to Steve Hopkins for allowing JEMS to present another one of his beloved audience recordings in a fresh light. As someone who has worked with a lot of audience tapes, Steve's work continues to amaze me as among the very best. Please show him some love in the comments, he deserves it.
Also, thanks to Professor Goody for weighing in on pitch and to mjk5510 for handling post production.
