Today we lost another music legend today. Blues Brothers Guitarist Matt Murphy was 88 years old.
This is the only Matt Murphy recording I have and the only one from 1996, that I've ever seen.
A little history on this legend:
Matt Murphy, born in Mississippi in 1929, moved to Memphis in the late 40's where he played with an early Howlin' Wolf band and was considered,
even then, one of the best guitar players in town. Murphy went on to play with Memphis Slim during the 1950's; Recording in Chess studios as one
of the best session players during the 1960's; and teamed up with James Cotton during the 1970's. In 1978 he joined the Blues Brothers,
stared in the 2000 movie, finally getting some well deserved recognition.
On hiatus from the Blues Brothers, Matt did session work both in studio and on stage with many musicians. Also established his first band in 1982.
In 1990 Murphy finally issued his own album "Way Down South" and in 1996 released "The Blues Don't Bother Me".
Murphy has been less active since he suffered a stroke on stage while performing in Nashville in 2003.
In 2011 Murphy released a live album from his 1986 performance at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA.
At the age of 84, Matt Murphy lives in Miami and still plays occasional shows.
Lead Vocals were performed by Angel Rissoff. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame on December 4, 2011.
There is guest vocals on track 12. I'm not sure of his name.
This has some B.B. King covers as well, which is right up my alley.
Some of the instrumentals are very long, extending the show to well over 2 hours.
The tape flips were quick and everything appears to be complete.
The sound quality on this recording is Very Good !!!
If anyone knows the titles for the instrumentals, please let me know.
Check out the samples
