These audience recordings of the MF band are surprisingly good quality, documenting
the band shortly after his return to the States. The first one is a bit low on the bass end, but
I figured it would take someone with better equipment than me to tackle the EQing there. I left it alone.
The 1972 CD-R simply says “unknown campus”, but don’t let that throw you. The recording
is again surprisingly good. This one was low on the treble end, and I boosted it slightly in
Adobe Audition. For all three discs, I took the liberty of boosting MF’s between-song banter,
as it was muffled and very hard to hear. In some cases, this made for an abrupt change in volume, but
I tried to smooth things out as best I could. Being able to hear what he’s saying is an improvement,
I think. Hopefully you’ll agree.

The pitch was off on every recording, and I had to bring it down 1 to 2% to make them in tune.
I also took the time to edit out numerous gaps in the audio where the
recorders were turned off. Tracks 5 thru 7 on Disc 1 were normalized to a different volume level
than the rest of the ’71 audio; and also a different pitch. I have no idea what was going on, but my guess is
that two different playback devices were used during the original transfer process. I was able to change
pitch and volume to get them to match the rest of the audio. I doubt you’ll hear much difference .
The Big Dicker was never recorded on an album, and so this is a chance to hear another MF tune
you’d not hear otherwise. Right before Fire & Rain ’71, you can hear that MF has trouble with his
horn, and others are offering to let him use theirs. Not sure if he got his own working or if he finished the
gig with a different horn. Did the best I could with personnel!
