This is one of the finest documents of Maynard that I've ever heard. At the 1973
National Trumpet Symposium in Denver, CO, MF and the band conducted an open rehearsal
on August 14, followed by a concert that night. The previous day, MF and the
trumpet section had held a Q&A clinic, which included musical excerpts. The concert
is first rate and the rehearsal segment is also fascinating as he re-arranges the tunes
for live performance. Discs 1 thru 3 are some of the best recordings of MF that I've
encountered. For Disc 4, MF's voice is off mic much of the time, but you can make out
just about everything he says. The musical excerpts are well-recorded. If you've
ever wondered how his mind worked, or how he did what he did when he played, it's all here.
Disc 3 features a rare live version of MASH, which apparently was being considered by CBS
for use in the TV series. By the way, MF never explains this, but the tune titled 'SOMF'
stands for 'Sit on My Face.' He does explain that he had his wisdom teeth taken out
at the beginning of the tour, which explains why he overdubbed his part later on the
'Live at Jimmy's' album recorded only a month earlier. He sounds great all the
way through this, and the recordings are complete.

Via the miracle of Google, I was able to track down and contact the staff person who
assisted MF on-site at this event. According to him, these were archival recordings
made by the event staff, were never for sale, and which were either lifted or copied later.
Thanks to the Dime moderators for giving final approval for this torrent, and to Jim
Donaldson who was there in 1973 and remembers.

I'd like to request that the content of this torrent not be broken up, or at least
that the individual discs stay intact if people burn this for their friends. Many of the
MF recordings out there are mix-and-match compilations without date/location info, and
it would be tragic if this one got dismembered in a similar manner. I'm referring in
particular to Disc 3, which has fragments floating around everywhere.
