These came to me on normal bias cassettes. Discs 1 and 2 were on one tape, while
disc 3 came to me on side B of another tape that someone gave me. When I asked
the guy who gave it to me about the source of the MF recording, he had no idea and
said he didn’t even know it was on there. However, it is referred to on the drummer’s
website as ‘Live in Japan ‘76’, though it’s certainly not a legit recording. The sound
quality is excellent, though, tragically only the first half of each show was included.
The rest must be out there somewhere. I had to correct pitch on disc 2 (lowered 3%)
and disc 3 (raised 3%), and did some normalizing on disc 3 to get the left channel to
balance the right. Partial personnel introductions are made by MF on each show,
though the trumpets are edited out for some reason on discs 1 and 3. But that portion
was intact on disc 2, and it sounds like they were dressed in masks and some major
hijinks were going on that night. At the very end of disc 2, MF deals with a heckler
by calling her a ‘Goddamn drunk’. Hopefully someday the rest of these recordings will
surface, but in the meantime here’s what I’ve got, and it’s well worth hearing.
