04 Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me (Texas ’76)

Another excellent soundboard recording, showing MF and the band in top form. I included the
bonus track as it’s from the same era and source, and it’s the one tune from the
Texas ’76 tape that is not duplicated here. The saxes break into a few choruses of Charlie Parker’s
‘Now’s the Time’ at the end of ‘Two for Otis’. The tape ends after Gospel John, though they most likely
played at least one other tune. I get the impression the soundman was cautious about switching tapes before
they ran out, but no other tapes from this era have surfaced. He also turned off the tape during the trumpet
section introduction, though I don’t’ think there were any changes to the section since the Orlando ’76 show,
which was torrented here recently. It’s possible Rich Caruso was no longer on the band, but the bones are
not introduced on tape. The drummer is the only change from Orlando ’76 that I’m certain of, but at any
rate, I doubt any uncertainties in the personnel will lessen your enjoyment of this gem of a recording.
