This is a pleasantly clear audience recording of what
sounds like a whole concert, and a fine one it was,
beginning with McCoy Tyner's group for the 1st 3 songs
and then Carlos Santana and Armando Peraza pour a little
energy into an already invigorating group of players.
McCoy is one of those guys I don't tire of very easily,
especially in the 1970's, but I've only found two things
I don't like much about McCoy Tyner music: He's developed
a recent liking for trios, and while anything with
Tyner is going to have fine music in it, I have always
thought he and his various groups sound alot better in
a 4-7 piece group. The second is he almost never plays with
a guitarist- I've seen McCoy 6 times, recorded 5 of
them, and never been the slightest bit disappointed.
This was not one of those. I got this in a trade many
years ago. I couldn't say which McCoy recording I have is
the best concert, they're all from the 70's and all
fine shows. But this is the only one I have of him with
a guitarist (any guitarist), and he picked a dandy.
An unusual collaberation for sure, but McCoy and Carlos
each wrote a song for each other and at least 1, I think
both are in this set. So they weren't total strangers.
Apparently they respect each other's talents and they played
well together. This is a rare combination of great
musical talent assembled for a night of jamming in
San Francisco that should provide musical and spiritual
inspiration all over the world. I hope I can help enable them
to do some more of that by sharing this show. Carlos and McCoy
are no strangers to that role which helps make this a very
enjoyable concert.
