With a smaller ship, a shorter cruise, and the loss of Steve Hackett, UK, Tangerine Dream, Renaissance, Strawbs and more, you might imagine that Cruise to the Edge 2015 would pale in comparison to its predecessor. We had such a great time last year that we booked passage well before the 2015 line-up was complete and were somewhat disappointed that this year's cruise seemed to be skewed towards the "newer" prog bands. Nevertheless, there was still a core of old school bands that I wanted to see, and I was happy to discover some great music by bands I was unfamiliar with or had ignored.
We boarded the Pearl at noon in blustery conditions, with a pool stage-heavy schedule that would be sure to change given the bleak forecast. With a new ship to learn (from a recording perspective), I was glad to see that the first two bands were scheduled indoors. I thought it was a bit ambitious to schedule Messenger at 2:00 in the atrium, and in a sign of things to come, we sat through a one hour sound check while the crew attempted to locate missing gear. Before the band could start their set, we had to break for the lifeboat/safety drill. When we finally returned to the atrium, it was obvious that a new schedule conflict had now been created due to the delay. Such is life at a floating music festival. In the end, Messenger kicked things off nicely with their thoughtful music and insightful melodies. The voyage had begun!
