I've heard nothing but great things about Michael Burks, this being my
first time seeing him play live i was really excited to see him at Brian's
Backyard BBQ & Blues because it's a great place to see a show, great food,
friendly staff and taper friendly environment what more could you ask ?.

Everything i heard about Michael Burks was true and then some, he is a true
bluesman on all accounts, on guitar he delivers an explosive assault of chops
reminiscent of Albert King and the other King's, his voice is very soulful &
gritty like the late Bill Perry and demands your attention.

This is by far one of the best blues shows i've ever been to, Michael Burks is
full of suprises onstage and knows how to keep the audience excited and on it's
toes, truly entertaining and blues at it's best.

About the show

I'm not familiar with all of Michael's work, some stuff is covers , some classics
so any help with the setlist if wrong is welcome.

The show starts off with "Pack It Up" & "Change Your Mind" some tasty cuts that lead
to " Ashes In My Ashtray" an original song that is full of soulful lyrics and guitar
laden with emotion only to outdo himself with several more to follow including one of
my favorites "Empty Promises" a song i've seen done by several other artists like Eric
Steckel who does a great tribute.

One of the highlights of this show was B.B.King's "Thrill Is Gone", a song almost every
bluesman will play sometime or another, but Michael who play's a wireless rig onstage so
he can go walkabout the crowd does and commences not only to dazzle the audience with his
brilliant guitar playing but is able to do it walking about the crowd stopping at tables,
sitting down and even going outside playing in the road before walking back around to the
kitchen and making his way back onstage without missing a note, what a tremendous show of
talent from this guy, a truly memorable experience.

The rest of the show is much of the same, also being Michael's birthday the second set was
really about having fun and showing off a little, paying homage to Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray
and Carlos Santana.

Michael Burks is no doubt one of the great living blues artists of our time with a genuine
originality that sets him aside from others, if you don't know Michael Burks you should check
him out by going to a live show etc.
