Day 1 of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass followed a grueling work schedule. My friend Ted was
staying close by and he volunteered to pull the early shift to get the spot. I woke up at
4:45 AM and checked my phone. There was a series of text messages with pictures of each
blanket and location. I arrived in the neighborhood at 6:30 and found a parking spot
nearby. I took pictures so I had proof of legal parking and walked in. I found the tarp
at Banjo stage and a number of familiar faces. About an hour before music started I worked
my way to Rooster Stage for Jonathan Rice who I had heard when he played with Jenny Lewis.
I spotted another taper friend and easily recorded the set. Next up was Jessica Pratt who
was new to me. Her set started with major sound issues which was kind of funny. She would
touch her guitar and there was feedback issues. Eventually the problem was solved.

At the conclusion of the set I packed up and trecked back to Banjo Stage. The band on stage
was playing a really hot cover of Psycho Killer as I navigated the crowd. I got back to the
spot as the song ended. I started the recorder and got the last 20 minutes of the Monophonics
set. In some way I regretted not coming back to Banjo for the full set but fellow taper Randy
got the full set. At the break I was able to set my chair in the prime spot on the tarp and
got a nice recording of the Mavericks. Not a band I was familiar with but very good. This
was followed by Punch Brothers. They were lots of fun. inally, Michael Franti and Spearhead.
They are very high energy. The one think I did not enjoy was Michael Franti likes to roam the
crowd. At one point I started getting text messages from friends watching the webcast. While
he is going into the crowd they could see me recording. Fortunately no issues. After the set
ended it was a quick walk to the car and on the way home. Day 1 a success.
