::: Distant lo-fi but clarity & other issues improved for more enjoyable listening. Check samples for pain or pleasure.
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Some inherent distortion. #01 slightly fuzzier than the rest. Somewhat abrupts stops&starts as taper shut off deck between songs.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is a REMASTER of the previously DIMED grner1 "Mk1" upload available at http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=485143
::: *DATE: Actual gig date believed to be March 24-26, 1967 run. 24th/25th shows Winterland & 26th Fillmore Auditorium.
::: grner1 kindly provided the most recent date correction from another copy of the tape that surfaced.
::: Originally DIMED April 2007 as "unknown venue 1966" & later mistakenly changed to 1967-05-29 Winterland.
::: Moby Grape apparently did NOT play Winterland (or any known location) on 1967-05-29.
::: Previous uploads of this tape included the 1966-11-25 Fillmore Auditorium tape as well.
::: POSTER at www.wolfgangs.com/posters/moby-grape/poster/BG056.html
::: Moby Grape headlined this Bill Graham production. Chambers Brothers & the Charlatans also on the bill.
::: Ticket prices $3 for the Friday & Saturday Winterland shows & $2 for the Sunday evening Fillmore show.
::: 1st LP recorded March 11-April 25 & issued June 06. If gig date is correct, twas in the midst of making the LP.
::: Columbia issued 10 of 13 trax from the 1st LP as five 45s & issued them on the same day as the LP.
::: 6 of the 10 songs played here were released on the 1st Moby Grape album.
::: "Looper" was recorded as a demo for the 1st LP but no version was released 'til "Truly Fine Citizen" in '69.
::: "Big Boss Man" seems to be the only pre-69 version by Moby Grape to surface, so far.
::: If "It's Gonna Take A Lot" is the correct title, it's the only version to surface that I can find.
::: "Dark Magic", a legendary Grape workout song, remained unissued officially until 2010.
::: Wonderful Moby Grape family tree & gig list at http://www.chickenonaunicycle.com/Moby%20Grape.htm
::: "Dark Magic" seems taped from the same place as the rest, but took a different EQ setting to match.
::: Winterland was aka the "Winterland Ballroom" & often also referred to as Winterland Arena.
Lineage ::: unknown mono recorder/microphone -> master tape -> low generation reel -> Teac X-1000R -> Macintosh w/Digidesign Audiomedia III card -> Pro Tools (minor "nip&tuck" edits, normalization&tracking, rougher edges smoothed out w/cuts during applause improved by adding fades & short pauses where appropriate. Many level changes & minor dropouts removed. No EQ or noise reduction) -> AIFF -> xACT -> flacs.
DimeTravel Remaster 2018-04-29 ::: flacs -> TLC -> wavs -> Audacity [fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, clap, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, +0.5% averaged pitch (speed) fix with single pass after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO noise reduction, relatively low level but quite beneficial differential EQ applied] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded 2018-05-xx.
Line-up ::: Jerry Miller - electric guitar, vocals // Alexander Lee "Skip" Spence - electric guitar, vocals // Peter Lewis - electric guitar, vocals // James Robert "Bob" Mosley - bass, vocals // Don Stevenson - drums, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 417 ::: Thanks to the original taper! MANY thanks to the original uploader (and reseeder) grner1 for the recording & original remastering, his revised information on the date & his blessing for my upload. SINCERE thanks to hendrixfan1995 for his EQ program. This one goes out to Bill Tobin, a REAL Moby Grape aficionado, he would have dug it a LOT. ::: Corrections welcome ::: All in all, this one is a pretty unique document just due to the setlist, given the mix of first album material presumably before its release & what were to remain relative rarities to most of the world for the rest of the selection. Other than the generally muffled sound, many of the issues I worked on didn't appear until after the EQ was applied, so I am only uploading one version of this show. It is still no great shakes for quality, but we still don't have much Grape to chose from. My observation was I've moved the listener from out in the lobby to somewhere in the balcony - distant, but listenable & much clearer than it was previously. Takes you back to the day when the Grape (along with the likes of Paul Revere & the Raiders) were unlikely contenders for teenage girl heartthrobs, and playing their hearts out - unique & exciting sounds from an insanely talented group - to quite their Wikipedia entry, "featuring tight harmonies, multiple guitars, imaginative songwriting, and a strong level of musicianship". Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
