Notes: This was my only successful audio recording, in that it is a mostly complete show. I've since videotaped a couple of dozen shows
but, for whatever reason, the two or three attempts I made at audio taping resulted in me being terrified of being caught. Perhaps, it's the
proximity of audio taping - being much closer to the stage, security tends to be a bit more conspicuous. I attempted to record Melissa
Etheridge in 2001, but, only managed to capture the first half and disgarded the master, though, the half show does circulate on CDR.
I also attempted to record Yes in 2001, but, failed to properly adjust my recording levels, so all I got was blaring distortion. I disgarded
those masters as well, never circulating (or keeping for myself) a copy.
But, this show, I was determined to get right. I figured that I would be the only person to capture the show for posterity, and having caught
the trio during my non-taping teen years three previous times (in '86, '87 & '89), I wasn't going to miss the opportunity. The show started very
late - there was a whole other show starring Billy Gilman and HIS opening acts that played until at least 10PM (strangely, my ticket stub made no
mention of it). I don't recall Natural being there, but, I do recall that there was an opening act for the Monkees after Billy Gilman's closing performance.
The venue was the annual Greeley Stampede and the show itself took place inside of the rodeo stadium.
The sound was terrible where I was sitting, and the tape is an accurate representation of that - blaring, distorted vocals, high in the mix, with clearer
supporting instruments lower. But, it's not a terrible listen - your ears adjust as you listen, and it's actually one of the better audience tapes made of
the band's 2001 summer tour. I immediately traded this recording to a respected Monkees trader, and he later graded this recording an 'A-' on his tradelist.
I was flattered, of course, but, don't get your hopes too high - Monkees audience recordings tend to be a bit on the raw and unsophisticated side (this
one included). An 'A-' Monkees audience recording is probably the equivalent of 'B', or less, 1970s Led Zeppelin audience tape.
I personally would rank this recording a solid 'B.'
I honestly don't recall the tape recorder that I used - yes, in 2001, I was using an analog tape recorder. And, not a very good one, at that.
But, I had some mikes that someone gave me - they were nothing special - so, I figured I do it old school. The recorder, the mikes and the master tapes
were lost a year or so later in a nasty divorce that also resulted in the loss of my partial concert ticket collection, and, most tragically, the
last picture I took with my grandmother, taken just months after this concert, in December of 2001. Later, my true love and now wife Lori and I
took up videotaping, and that's what we've focused on ever since.
The performance is captivating. I've heard numerous Monkees concert recordings, and having see them three times prior, knew all of their standard
jokes and setups. But, it still worked for me, and having brought my younger brother Michael to that show with me for his first ever concert, and seeing
HIS enjoyment at their antics, I knew that they had brought a bit of stage magic with them that night. Corny as that sounds.
Enjoy - trade freely, never buy or sell. I wouldn't do that to you.
Relax, breathe, and don't freak out. Namaste.
