Freak Valley Notes... by Spacebandit
---------------------

Once again the opening of the outdoor festival madness here in Germany started in an industrial area of tiny Netphen near Siegen. As in the two years before, the ROCKFREAKS put on a
fantastic lineup of stoner/doom/heavy 70's/bluesrock/spacerock, whatever your heart fills with joy. Some bands there did exclusive shows, with no further touring in Germany or even in
Europe, so the crowd gathering at Freak Valley consited of music lovers from all over the continent, sometimes even more far away. The sound was very good, and the lawn in front of the
stage as well (more later on that!). But somehow I feel that the spirit of Freak Valley has changed since last year. To be honest: To a more commercial festival. Though it might be good
for the event itself, there's a whole lotta more to make better next year. As me and my friends arrived in pouring rain on thursday noon, we could not get the usual parking lot in front
of the venue, but were forced to park our five station wagons (for comfortable old men's sleep) about a kilometer away. Well, that was nothing troubling, but the walk along a crowded
highspeed road on 50 centimeters (with cars almost NOT speeding down) was really life-risking. OH MY GOD! Even as they put out signs of 30 KM/H, some idiots cruised along me with 100+!
You wanna get killed by the roadside by an asshole who refuses to put the speed down on his car (only for about 500 meters)? I can think of a better way to die...Guess the drivers in that
Siegerland are all crazy. And the police had a chance to collect hundrets of licences...but where did I see our beloved HELPERS...? N.o.w.h.e.r.e !
Oh, hell yeah, that was the thing that I'm seriously PISSED. All other minor annoying things, like the rude kicking crowd during some shows are just "kindergarden"...Just KICK back...
All thanks to my "Psychedelik Stammtisch" crew of Michael, Wolli, Joerg and my dear brother Martin, and of course, to our good friend LORD DIE, who managed to get a secure parking lot
about 150 meters from stage, but for the price of a hip-surgery and a walking stick before...He deserved to get that!
A BIG BUNCH of THANKS to the whole Freak Valley workers for making this festival A REAL GOOD TIME. Thanks also for the well-behaved SECURITY boys and girls (but only from Friday on, where
were you on thursday? Day off?). Last not least, all thanks to the great ANNOUNCER Volker. Great to hear almost the same introduction to all bands!
So...well I need to write this...WEATHER REPORT...

May 29th - heavy rain on the drive/light rain all through the evening. night temperatures about 8+ C.
May 30th - no rain, clouded sky, broke up to the clear moonlight. night temperatures about 3/4+ C. Brrrr...
May 31st - fantastic sunshine all day long! night temperatures about 8/9+ C.

Admission fee: In advance, EARLY BIRD TICKETS, bought last November, 45 Euros.

Catering on Festival ground: Pizzabude (nh!), a Veggiefood booth (naja...) and a Fritten/Currywurstbude (auch nicht berragend!).
Two big sized Veltins Bier Booths, and a very crowded Cocktail-Bar...Oh, and of course, a much crowded Coffee-Bar.

Drain: Well, only four wagons to leave off your bladder and bowel remains. Sometimes an EMERGENCY, lifesaving procedere...2 more next year would be fine!

Ok, Ladies and gentlemen...here's a bit of FREAK VALLEY FESTIVAL 2014...

Rec Info:
OKM2R -> Zoom H2n (at WAV 16/44) -> SDcard -> HD -> Audacity (edit/volume boost only, no equalizing) -> WAV 16/44 -> TLH8 -> FLAC -> DIME -> YOUR EARS AND MIND...
Recorded by yours truly at first row dead center. Almost no chatters only a few hollers here and there audible, but nothing too disturbing.
I had serious mic cable problems that weekend, so I thought all my recordings were just plain shit. Luckily we split taping duties on three recorders, so a whole bunch was saved.
And sometimes miracles occur...I was about to delete the SDcard for further action on Burg Herzberg, when I thought, c'mon give it a try! Listen to the damaged recording once.
And it turned out not nearly as bad as I thought. Ok, there are volume drops throughout the show, and some crackling noises (like you probably know from a once wet-played vinyl),
but the overall sound is pretty fine for an outdoor recording. And the Bentbass will kill your speakers! So, beware! Anyway I'll suggest to play this at 11 of 10 volume, cause it
was MADE LOUD TO PLAY LOUD! Sorry, no pics this time.

MOTORPSYCHO at Freak Valley! As you all know about the loving devotion of yours truly Spacebandit for these guys from Norway, you also know that a recording from them was simply
what we call here in Germany "Chefsache". After securing the pole position very early and some nice chats with the fellow psychonauts around me, knowing about the "taper security"
from Uwe, his son and other fellows behind me (to keep chatters on distance), I was ready for a full blast 2hour show of my favourite (active) band. It was very nice to watch the
band setting up their gear, as during the show the "nebula" machines were in full work covering the stage in deep thick fog.
Well, things progressed a bit slowly (or as Bent said: A warm-up) with the Allman Brothers inspired jazzy tune of WHIP THAT GHOST. After a hardrockin' ON A PLATE the choice of TRIGGERMAN
was just wonderful. Another rare played tune from this tour! All HELL broke loose after that for the core of the set, another great 40 minute version. And whilst some friends were
hoping for a more festival-like gig with more/other songs woven in, the tune shows the band at their possible creative climax. A well-structured monster of progressive spacerock!
Next up was another highlight, a picture-perfect CLOUDWALKER into a mindblowing SUPERSTOOGE. Waoh!
But it wasn't enough yet, as the band pulled out a short but very heavy STARHAMMER followed by the perfect choice for a stoner rock festival, a great version of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD'S
INTO THE SUN. Fantastic! Rounding up the set was another very fast HALLUCIFUGE, until the band left the stage for only a few seconds. Well, the only little downer of the show came
on the last day of May (sic! BOC). Bent asked the crowd for their encore wish, and the answer was simultaniously from lots of throats: Vortex Surfer.
Unfortunately (and I think only because the band hadn't played that in a few years, even not with the addition of Reine) they did not play the "magical tune" (even if they knew that one
of the organizers named his lovely club "Vortex" in honor of the song), so PLAN #1 rolled out this great show. I had hoped for something different like "All is loneliness" or even
an acoustic ending, but maybe it was theirs to roll out the carpet for the closing act of FREAK VALLEY 2014, Kadavar...
All's well that ends well (as I did not attend the mentioned Kadavar show). Hope you'll like what you hear. See you on the next tour, dear Psychonauts! And for Bent's sake in german:
"Darauf einen Underberg". Prost! SB.
