NOTES:
Was given/offered another free ticket to the ACL theatre during my summer stint here in Austin, and this time it was for a Hall of Fame induction show for My Morning Jacket. I didn't even know ACL had their own Hall of Fame, let alone hosted induction ceremonies and shows for it, though it all makes sense when you think about it.
Honestly, I don't really care for hall of fame type stuff, but if that's what helps pay the bills, puts butts in seats and keeps the theatres open and running and more shows happening, then by all means, go for it and pat yourself and others on the back. The format of the show was basically introduction speech by someone associated with ACL > a video package presentation (with shoutouts from Zach Galifianakis, Rilo Kiley, Mumford and Sons, and more) > an introduction speech by filmmaker/director Cameron Crowe (that was sort of cool) > acceptance speech by the band themselves > quick intermission/stage set up > full show by the band (with an encore). I taped/recorded all of it.
My seats were once again up in the top balcony, right in line with one of the speaker stacks, and it was an aisle seat with no one sitting to the right of me, so I lucked out. Couldn't have been any better or more comfortable I don't think. I think this was my third time seeing MMJ, after Coachella 2008 and Bottlerock 2024. So basically my first time seeing them outside a festival setting.
Because this was a taping (that I'm guessing is airing on PBS later this year?), you were warned that they could restart or reshoot any number of songs during the performance, and unlike the Marias from a couple weeks prior, they did end up stopping one song (Time Waited) because the guitar was out of tune and restarting it. I'm sure if this was a festival, they would have just kept going, but under these special circumstances, they were trying to make everything perfect. I of course left that mishap in on this recording, as I prefer recording, capturing, editing and presenting everything as it happened, in its most raw form, flaws and all.
Overall it was a great show, the band sounded really on point and the crowd was really vibing with it. They're not my favorite band, not by a long shot, but they do put on a great live show, there's no arguing with that. So congrats to the band for their ACL HoF induction (whatever that's worth in the long run).
