There is a short cut in the middle of the first song ("A Dream That Can Last") due to a loose cable that I quickly fixed; there short cut in this recording in the middle of "On The Beach" due to (I believe) a battery death and a similar cut in Fuckin' Up; Like A Hurricane cuts out a little early due to the show overflowing the length of a 3 hour DAT tape, Ohio also (inexplicably) cuts out a little early. I also cut out some unrecoverable (I transferred the 2nd set twice to see if I could get a clean transfer the 2nd time around) sub-second digital glitches in the Music From Dead Man segment.

I carefully scrubbed some locally loud claps, yells, and whistles (plus a bit of feedback) for your (and my!) enjoyment.

Recorded, transferred, mastered, tracked, tagged, and posted by Scott Bernstein

DAT Transfer: 5/29/2012; 2nd set re-transfrerred on 4/24/2019

Taper notes:
Going in a completely different direction for BARN182, I pulled out this recording I made of a free Neil Young Tribute concert at the beautiful Prospect Park Bandshell which was put together by Hal Willner, ex musical director of Saturday Night Live. He has been known to periodically put together tribute concerts to other artists over the years. Since Neil Young has long been a favorite performer of mine, this seemed like a great show to attend (and record). As a (not obsessive) fan of Neil since the late 1980s, the very breadth and depth of his catalog makes it difficult to be very familiar with all of his songs -- and clearly this setlist was written to cover all bases of his catalog -- not just the "hits" -- including some of his much maligned late 80s output, soundtracks, etc.

The lineup of performers is not exactly "all star" -- as none of the performers are truly well-known, but they all had something interesting to contribute. As tends to happen in a super-long (3+ hours) tribute concert such as this with so many varied performers coming on and off stage, there are moments of brilliance and some segments that drag, but on the whole, everything here is worth a listen. I recommend taking this show in small chunks over a few listening sessions so you can digest it all. Some particular highlights now that I've listened through a few times: Eric Mingus (yes, Charles' son) and his incredible voice just KILLING "Helpless"; in the first set there is a really great stretch of music starting with Iron and Wine's breathaking take on "Cowgirl in The Sand" through Peter Stampfel and John Kruth's purposefully loose take on "Comin' Apart At Every Nail", Antony's fragile take on "A Man Needs A Maid", Jenni Muldaur's version of "Harvest", Cat Power's passionate take on "Mr. Soul", and Sun Kil Moon's beautiful version of "Albuquerque". Both of James Blood Ulmer's segments are noteworthy. My favorite part of the 2nd set is the run from Ron Sexsmith's take on "Wrecking Ball", Teddy Thompson's take on "I Believe In You", Sun Kil Moon's "Powerfinger" take, and (surprisingly!) Ambrosia Parsley's jawdroppingly beautiful version of "Bandit" from the Greendale album.

Also amazingly for this recording, the crowd around me was dead-silent during the performance -- which is really important for an "in hat" stealth recording (my normal recordings are done with a mic stand that I raise 6-12 feet into the air -- which helps me avoid some of the crowd noise by getting my mics way above the crowd). I did have to do some between-song loud clap scrubbing, and most of my mastering work for this recording went into gently normalizing the extreme volume difference between the loud and very quiet songs. Other than that, you're hearing exactly what went onto my DAT tape.

Enjoy this piece of history!!!
