>> Swell Maps, the Jacobites and solo artist extraordinaire - UNCIRCULATED << with samples

Preliminary remark 1:

Herr "Sir" hanwaker, by the way the one and only true hanwaker and
a longtime faithful friend, started a series of Nikki Sudden uploads
to honor this exceptional and incommensurable artist. NOT to forget
the BIG BIG THANKS to seethelight7 for opening his vaults...

This one here is for you...and as a heartfelt welcome to a certain hanno !

Preliminary remark 2:

As far as I know NONE of this recording was ever used commercially.

This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

Nikki Sudden, born Adrian Nicholas Godfrey (19 July 1956 26 March 2006) was
a prolific English singer-songwriter and guitarist. He co-founded the post-punk
band Swell Maps with his brother Epic Soundtracks (born Kevin Paul Godfrey) while
attending Solihull School in Solihull.

Following the band's break-up in 1980, he started a solo career, as well as releasing
records with Dave Kusworth as the Jacobites. Kusworth had been a member of the
Dogs D'Amour and led his own band, The Bounty Hunters.

Sudden's influences included bands such as T.Rex, The Rolling Stones and Johnny Thunders.
He also collaborated with, among others, Mike Scott and Anthony Thistlethwaite of The
Waterboys, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, members of Sonic Youth, Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones,
Rowland S. Howard, Ian McLagan of Small Faces and The Faces, members of R.E.M., Phil
Shoenfelt and Al DeLoner of Midnight Choir. The Jacobites' tune "Pin Your Heart" was
covered on The Lemonheads' 1997 single "The Outdoor Type".

Sudden also wrote for a number of music magazines, such as Spex, INTRO, Mojo and
Bucketful of Brains. At the time of his unexpected death, he was writing his
autobiography, as well as a history of the Wick (an estate in Richmond once owned
by Ronnie Wood, currently owned by Pete Townshend), and was due to perform in
London on the 29th of March 2006.

Nikki died on the 26th of March 2006, after a concert in New York City.

All the following texts were written by Nikki and have not been changed:

I was born at 8 o'clock in the morning on the outskirts of London on 19 July. My
brother, Epic, entered the world on 23 March a couple of years on down the road -
the day of his birth is my first real memory. Our parents moved to Solhull, six
miles south of Birmingham when I was eight and that was where Epic and I met
David Barrington who was to become Phones Sportsman during Sunday School at the
Gospel Hall on Poplar Road. Despite the three of us attending different schools
we stayed friends through the coming years.

After hearing Jeepster and Telegram Sam by T.Rex I bought my first guitar. Dave got
one the next week and Epic decided he wanted to play the drums. Three school friends
joined in and our band became Swell Maps. We made our first single in September 1977
and released another three 45s and two albums before breaking up.

I went solo and put out two albums before forming the Jacobites with Dave Kusworth
in 1983. We made two LPs then split. Dave put together The Bounty Hunters while I
carried on with my solo career. I made six more LPs before Dave and I reformed the
band in the early nineties. We recorded another handful of albums. Nowadays we both
have our own bands and make solo albums. I moved from England to Berlin, Germany in
1996 and that has been my base ever since. Dave Kusworth And His Group - Dave Twist on
drums and Eammon Duffy on bass are one of the best rock'n roll bands I have ever seen!

Work is almost finished on the follow up to Treasure Island, with John Barry, Danny Hole,
Darrell Bath and Einar Stenseng. Dave and I have a bunch of songs ready and wiling and
able and plan to record the next Jacobites LP during the first months of 2006. In an
average year (not that I have many of those) I play one hundred gigs - fifty solo and
fifty with my band. Life rolls on. My new album, The Truth Doesn't Matter, will be
released in Europe and the States in April.

My dear buddy Ken TheCommish usually writes (and hey, he's damn right):
If you decide to download this show, won't you please consider posting a comment
on the show's board? It only takes a moment, and believe me, it takes A LOT longer
to prepare/upload a show for others to enjoy than it does to download and run...

You know, our friend Dave T says: "There's always more to come..."
And i'll promise you to keep MY tapes coming...
