VARIOUS ARTISTS - 1982-83 - Norwich "Scene" FM Compilation (FM0/TV0)

This is a compilation of FM and TV recordings of various bands that made up part of the so-called Norwich, UK "scene" of the early 1980's, namely: The Farmer's Boys, The Higsons, Testcard F, Popular Voice and The Crabs (the all-female Norwich kinda-funk group, NOT the former all-male punk outfit).

These are all master stereo FM (or TV - effectively, UHF mono FM) recordings.

Lineage: BBC Radio 1 FM -> Roof Aerial -> Pioneer TX-710 Tuner -> Pioneer CT-300 Cassette Deck (record) -> cassette tape (brands given in tracklists).

Conversion to FLAC :-

Master source tape -> Aiwa Cassette Deck (play) -> SB Extigy soundcard -> CoolEdit Pro 2.1 -> WAV -> TLH -> FLAC 8 & .ffp

This is recorded from an FM repeat broadcast late at night on the John Peel show and billed/introduced as "The Farmer's Boys Go To Coventry", but apparently it was originally broadcast live (presumably not on FM though) during DJ Peter Powell's show sometime between 4:30 - 7 p.m on BBC Radio 1.

Original source tape brand = Memorex MRX3
Unfortunately, as I realised later, Memorex tapes (in those days, at least) had a poor quality tape transport mechanism compared even to some other much cheaper brands, as well as an apparently relatively low cohesivity of the magnetised layer (in this case, presumably some iron oxide alloy or other) to the backing plastic tape. This means that of some the surviving cassettes of this brand that remain in my collection have suffered with age, and in the case of this The Farmer's Boys recording there are some noticeable drop-outs during the first one and half minutes of the first song. However, it is still listenable, and the sound quality does improve considerably after the affected initial period of 1-2 minutes. Only one or two of the other songs are affected by 1 or 2 relatively very minor (barely noticeable) drop-outs.
