a Masters of Jazz Series.
Masters of jazz from master audience tapes.
these are 3 of the best masters of jazz here, all together.
This was not a tour, just a brief interruption after the 80/81 tour
for some more trying out something a little different at Ryles.
Metheny did quite a bit of that there.
Realistic mini-mikes > Sony 310 cassette deck (auto levelling) >

this is apparently the 1st ever concert of Metheny/ Haden/ DeJohnette trio.
Pat had been playing in a trio with Dave Holland before this. this was the third
year in a row I had seen Metheny try out something different at Ryles and they
were all very nice music. several of the songs here were new. Ryles is a small
place and the sound is like you are there. the recording has a few minor problems,
barely noticable any more after remastering with a few patches, some clap reduction
and is the complete 2 sets played this night. I'm no expert on Metheny titles
especially from "offramp" but there may be a few from that in here. there's plenty of
nice playing and while I didn't like trios before or after this in general,
this was one of the finest trio shows I've seen. this has probably seen circulation
on tape, but it needs to be shared from the master tape. It's a fresh show of a
new band (although none were strangers to each other). This is the next best thing
to having Pat play a show in your living room. Ryles is a frequent nominee for the
best jazz club in the Boston area (Cambridge is just across the Charles River friom
Boston.) This will not fit on 2 CD's, if you're thinking about saving this to a DAT,
I'd recommend it, because it's close to 3 hours of really sweet playing by 3 great
musicians. This is one of my favorite Metheny performances (hey, anything with Jack
will jack my interest in a hurry. TRhey all soundedc delightful in this intimate show.
I know ricola likes "big bands in small places", and he has alot of company there
so this one is for Ricola (and undoubtably many others, I'm sure mr mags and kinebee
and lestat will all like this show too.)
do not sell this recording.
Trade freely, losslessly and gaplessly.
