This is an excellent capture of the Trio that released an album in 1989 called Question and Answer. This was up on DIME a few times going back to a share by rudolff in 2005, alphascan in 2007, and rlouk in 2011. My copy came via a long ago cd-r trade, so I'm unsure how close this is to any of the prior versions upped here. Notes in the dimebot archive from rlouk's share indicated some work being done to boost highs and lows on what he'd mentioned being a very midrange heavy recording that also included some pops that he treated. The version being shared now didn't seem to suffer from what rlouk addressed, but I think the trade that brought this to me would've been earlier than his 2011 share.
The biggest problem I encountered related to how the music sat on my 2 cd-r's. The order of everything on my 2nd disc was completely off, and I did need to consult the tracking lists from alphascan and rlouk to get this right. I did my retracking in Audacity, and separated the 2 Metheny announcements, the 2nd of which actually digresses into a vocal rendition from Roy Haynes into a bit of Kenny Roger's The Gambler with Pat playing along. Pat's reference to "one more song for you" made me think that came between All the Things...and Cantaloupe Island, but the tracking I saw in the other shares and on etree made me place that after The Calling. Nothing was done sonically in Audacity, but sbe's from my discs were detected in TLH and repaired.
One final note withthis new share is that it's been shared here and in etree collections with the date of January 28th, but Marc Morvan's PMDB refutes that date. He shows this trio playing 2 consecutive nights in Tokyo on the 27th and 28th, but indicates that a live recording only came out of the performance on the 27th. I find Marc is generally correct, and the best online info repository for concert info and show dates relating to Metheny. Therefore, I'm guessing that the date of the 28th used for many years is incorrect, and I'm hoping that my use here of the 27th won't cause too much confusion. Many thanks to the trader that sent me this.
