This is a terrific capture of a very long show by the Pat Metheny Group from the final date of their 1985 North American touring. The First Circle album had come out in the latter part of 1984. PMG toured parts of North America beginning in mid October 1984, then Europe in the Spring of 1985, and more of North America from late June up to the date of this show. These summer US dates included the vocal group Perri, and they performed with the PMG on a few songs in these shows. The PMG would soon move on to South America, Japan, Australia, and Hawaii up to the end of October. Of course, this all yielded a number of live recordings, and some of them are quite good. That said, this is one of the best among the audience captures, and it even may be seen as better than some of the flawed boards (e.g. Hammersmith/London). With that said, if the archive is correct, this doesn't seem to have been here on DIME prior to now.
This came to me quite long ago on 2 discs in a snail mail cd-r trade. I'd hoped to share what was on those discs back near to the anniversary date of this show in early August. In what turned out to be a blessing (read on), one of my 2 discs had deteriorated to the point where sharing what I had on hand wasn't an option. I put out feelers to a number of people for the files needed to replace basically all of my first disc. No one seemed to have this show, other than someone not on DIME who had their discs in storage after a move and still hasn't gotten back to me. Waterwheel (Christoph) represented salvation in a really big way because not only did he have the show, but his copy included more music than I had. His copy was particularly remarkable in that the final 2 songs here (Praise and Bilbao) aren't even present in the setlist on the PMDB, which ends at San Lorenzo. This is definitely an audience capture, and there is occasional nearby talk, but whoever recorded this did an incredible job-particularly given the dynamics of a live PMG set.
This was all opened in Audacity to check the files for digital gaps or anything else that might require attention. There were a few things that necessitated a bit of retracking. The start of a few tracks appeared in the final seconds of previous tracks, there were minor gaps in a few places, and about 2 minutes of Straight on Red also was part of the Goodbye track prior to appearing again in its own dedicated spot. Those things were repaired, and EQ and Mastering tools in Audacity were used to give it all a bit more bottom and mids, while also reigning in a few of those dynamic high points that got pretty close to clipping. Pat's post First Circle intros and remarks had a cut of sorts before them, so they're not complete; and there are a few transitions between songs where some sort of fades or careful cuts might've taken place (maybe due to tape changes?), but all of the music is intact and well presented. This and another excellent Aud, the TapeTyrant Concord, N.H. show from late June, seem to be the 2 longest shows from this First Circle touring. The setlists between Concord, N.H. and this also match pretty well, but they are different shows and recordings.
Huge thanks to whoever recorded this so well and shared it so long ago. Thanks too to the trader who sent me discs to first turn me on to the merits of this show, and particularly huge thanks to Waterwheel (Christoph) for heeding my call for a new copy and exceeding my expectations with the additional music that's now included in this share.
