This was recorded just a few rows back from the PA stack on the left side of the theater. My first concert and recording attempt since the pandemic began. Mentioning that by way of explaining a few very minor issues with the recording. The Edirol conked out due to me trying to monitor the fact that it was recording for no more than a few seconds at the end of tracks 2 and 3. Nothing was lost here of consequence beyond slight end of song flourishes and/or applause. The third time was a drop out of a few seconds towards the beginning of Zenith Blue. Other than these spots, it's a good audience capture.
Just have to say that I'm not really knocked out by Side Eye. The players are great, but Pat seems to be turning a little bit into an oldies act over the last few years. It's almost as though he thinks his audience might desert him if he debuts or features "too much" new or current music. I don't see many jazz artists taking this tack in their performances, and I'm curious that he's doing this. I also wish there was a dedicated bassist. We all know the many fine bassists that he's employed over the years. I know Pat has said this is a nod back to his early days in a B3 Organ Trio, but it really isn't when considering the band's repertoire, and the array of keys that Francies uses. The "Jaco" sound on Bright Size Life is cool, but kind of canned.
Sorry for those asides. It is fabulous to hear musicians of this caliber live again. To mix musical genre references, Long May They Run. Please support them by paying to see them, and by purchasing their commercially released material.
