A huge crowd turned out under a full moon for a free Patti Smith show for the ages — I had heard from a friend who saw her the night before in Asbury Park that she was "on fire," and that carried over to this show.

Recorded from dead center about 50 feet from the stage, right next to a group of loud Italian women who fortunately quieted down after I glared at them during the opening song. The crowd on the whole was, let's say, boisterous, but mostly between songs, resulting in much amusing if not always amused banter from Patti.
