ok

so we didn't really have to wait for the 60th anniversary performance

just a day, in fact

and we're back in the palladium

one person who isn't, however, is jay dee daugherty

patti says nothing about his absence until the band intros in the second set

and even then only that he 'can't be here tonight'

hopefully all is well and it's just a case of exhaustion at the first two consecutive nights of the tour

jay dee hits those drums hard

longtime collaborator, polar bear's seb rochford steps into his shoes

a familiar face to most of the audience as a regular on european tours in the last few years

maybe this switch, however, is why we don't get any variation from the previous night's setlist

no 'ghost dance' or 'pissing in a river', which have made appearances in the previous week

no complaints, though

this is as incendiary a performance as night one

our seats aren't quite as good

but the symbiotic relationship between performer and crowd that makes or breaks a patti smith show is in full effect

and we are as much on that stage as the friendly (and very polite) invader who ventures forth after 'dancing barefoot'

it's that push and pull between bonhomie and brimstone, in fact, that keeps on bringing us back

patti smith may be screaming at us

but only because she loves us

and that goes both ways

onwards and upwards

enjoy
