I've wanted to see Patti Smith for a long time but for one reason or another always missed her sets by a few days from being out of town or having a conflicting event. Having her added to the Riot Festival Pre-Party was a really nice surprise. I learned the day before that Sunday pass holders were able to attend the Pre-Party due to the Nine Inch Nails cancellation, so I hustled over after my flight touched down with my gear and made it in time to catch a few bands. I left the Alkaline Trio set a bit early so I wouldn't miss anything and probably could have walked right to the front of the stage if I wanted to. Patti gave a great set - I really enjoyed her choice of songs and her backing band sounded great too. She spoke several times between songs and wished everyone a happy Mexican Independence Day. This was the quietest that this stage got the entire weekend. It seemed like they turned the sound down for her so I moved in closer than I was for most of the others in order to record her. Everything still sounded great and I like how it made it a more intimate performance as everyone moved in closer to the stage to listen.

I run a Rage Against the Machine live archive at http://ratm.live .
Please get in touch if you have any recordings of Rage!
