Notes:
For the fifth release in this series we have a master recording shared with me by my friend "Bob B". Unlike the torrent originally uploaded by "bossfannn", this is a recording of the entire show. Sonically, this recording is boomy, most likely because the recording was made from the balcony, with the cassette recorder placed under the seat. No post processing has been done; I'm sharing this as I received it. I only used EAC to rip the CD given to me. Even the most basic EQ'ing will improve the sound, and I welcome those with more experience to remaster this recording. Most tracks are rather long, as they include all the between song banter/poetry by Patti, which always adds to the experience of seeing her live.

This was a very special show for me, as it was my first Patti Smith concert, and it included a guest appearance by Bruce Springsteen for their live debut of "Because the Night". I remember it was freezing cold both outside and inside. Hilly Kristal rushed the opening of the old Anderson Theater and the heat didn't work. That was the start of the audience hostility. The front section of the orchestra were standing and dancing the entire show, so the fans around them kept yelling "sit down!" the entire night. (You can't hear it that much on this recording, but it's prevalent on the "bossfannn" capture.) The final nail in the coffin was the abrupt ending to the show, when the fire marshall pulled the plug because Hilly in his greed oversold the theater. At this point the fans wanted blood, and were ready to trash the place. Patti and Lenny were able to stop a riot, but things could have turned very ugly had Patti not calmed everyone down. After the show, I went up to the stage, and Patti continued to talk to the fans. I'll always remember what she said to someone that called the firemen "assholes". She said, "They're not assholes. That's someone's father, brother or uncle and they are just doing their job to protect us".

About me:
I've been going to concerts since 1975, starting with Lou Reed at the Felt Forum, 1975-04-26. I started taping on 1978-03-26 with Renaissance at City Center. From 1978 to 1982 I used a portable Panasonic RQ-2309 mono cassette recorder with built-in condenser microphone, as it's all I could afford. I mostly recorded my favorite band at the time, The Shirts, but there were some other new wave and punk bands from that era also. In mid-1982 I upgraded to the Aiwa HS-J2 walkman style recorder with the CM-2 stereo mic. Some of those recordings have already appeared on DIME as I used to trade tapes. Most of my master recordings are indexed on etreedb.org ( https://etreedb.org/10thFloorClown ), and I welcome requests on what I should upload to DIME next. I'd love to connect with some of the other NYC tapers from back then; please feel free to send me a PM. If anyone has any live recordings by The Shirts or Deaf School please contact me!
