Very good to excellent minus sound quality, IMHO.
7.5-9/10
As I did NOT tape this concert, this will be VERY short
and sweet. If you are unfamiliar with Aunt Patti or you
would like a good FM show of hers, this may be the place to
start. Her comments are hilarious and she is truly unique.
Poetess, priestess, shaman, visionary, wackjob, substance
abuser, retard : you be the judge. This is a fairly good-quality
show as far as sound quality is concerned and is excellent in
content. It offers an accurate glimpse of the artist circa 1978.
I got this tape in a trade about 20 years ago. There was a bit
of mystery surrounding it since it was mislabeled as far as the
date was concerned. This tape carried the date of May 4, 1978, a
show that has been upped twice either here or on The Trader's Den.
Yet the setlist is radically different from that show. If one can
trust a fine website:
(http://setlists.pattismithlogbook.info/years/1978.html), the PSG
played the same venue twice in 5 days and both shows were broadcast
on KZEL-FM !! This show is definitely a radio broadcast as Patti
talks about having listeners prepare alternate forms of entertainment
for when she goes into outer space. According to the info I gleaned
from the website, this show took place on May 9, 1978 but there is no
mention of an FM broadcast. The setlist proffered is IDENTICAL to the
setlist that appears on the recording. So hopefully case closed, mystery
solved.
My copy was mildly graphically equalized to remove hiss and boost the
midrange slightly. The master is no longer available but I heard it
once and this version sounds much better, trust me. There is still a
bit of hiss but nothing too intrusive. Parts of the recording are vg
in nature but I would call the rest of it ex-, as always, IMHO. There
are, I believe, two small edits on my copy but no music is missing.
The show appears to be complete to me. It's a wild performance with
a lot of Patti/audience interchange and stage banter. I'm fairly
certain that this show is rare but if any of you have a superior
version, please upload it !! I will post a sound sample for those
wanting reassurance but trust me, if you are a fan or just want a
good quality Patti Smith show, GET THIS NOW !!! Mr. Natural knows
that you will be groovin' to this one, so don't let him down.
That's pretty much all that I have to say, so let's wrap this up.....
Finally, please don't buy, sell or convert this show to mp3 or
any other lossy format. Please seed this as long as you can.
Please trade this freely as it probably is uncirculated. This
show will be a welcome addition to any Patti Smith fan's
collection. So be cool, don't freak out and enjoy the concert !
PS: If you like to add titles to your shows, you can call this
one "I ain't nobody's whore !" Also, if anybody has the following
recording : Patti Smith Group, Leona Theater, Homestead (Pittsburgh),
PA 7/15/1979, please PM me or post it. The Iron City Houserockers
opened for Patti and it was the only time that I ever saw her in
concert. TIA !
