This iteration of Paul Kelly's musical journey involved him pairing up with Melbourne bluegrass outfit Uncle Bill and together they produced the excellent album 'Smoke ". However on tour the ensemble used a single mic setup as the old bluegrass bands did, many Paul Kelly fans are used to showing up , drinking a lot and talking throughout , not so bad when the volume is ultra loud, however with Paul Kellys stint with Uncle Bill , this was far from the case...

The previous nights show had turned rather ugly , with people at the bar making a huge racket and those who wanted to listen shouting at them to shut the fuck up. We didn't attend but when we showed up to the second show there were notes on all the tables requesting patrons to be quiet and respectful !

It worked to a large extent although there is a slight bit of background noise on occasions and one or two whistlers who have had to have their contributions toned down a tad here and there.

I believe this is possibly the only complete recorded show of this tour , the ABC recorded the lineup on TV and part of a set was broadcast on AM from the Continental Cafe in Melbourne , but no full show has surfaced since 1999 that I am aware of.

I love this show , it was a labor of love to get it to sound reasonable as the single mic meant the sound was a bit thin when only the banjo was playing , the vocals had some distortion on occasions but I've smoothed all that out, if you don't crank it up to the max it should sound very nice in general.
This has been completely revised in 2021 using spectral tools and healing brush and its a good representation of this part of the musical journey of the guy who is probably Australia's singer songwriter.
